An accident involving fireworks caused two West Seattle buildings to go up in flames early his morning. A third building was partially damaged, said Helen Fitzpatrick, a fire department spokeswoman. The two homes that burned were under construction and still wooden frames.

The siding of the third house, which was occupied, suffered heat damage, Fitzpatrick said. The total damage to all three properties is estimated at $350,000, Fitzpatrick said. Firefighters first responded to the two-alarm fire at Southwest Findlay Street and 30th Avenue Southwest around 4:30, and a second group was dispatched ten minutes later.

"When firefighters arrived there were heavy flames and smoke coming from the first building," Fitzpatrick said. The fire quickly extended from one construction site to the next. "Both homes had no sheetrock, so there's extensive fire damage," Fitzpatrick said, adding that in one structure the floor collapsed.

About 70 firefighters responded to the fire. Roxana Popescu: 206-464-2112 or An accident involving fireworks caused two West Seattle buildings to go up in flames early his morning.
