TV One's Colmar Brunton poll has National on 52 per cent with Labour on 36 per cent support - giving National a 16-point lead.
In its May poll, National was on 56 per cent and Labour 31, a 25-point gap. The latest poll shows only the Greens reaching the 5 per cent party vote threshold needed to get MPs into Parliament without winning an electorate seat. The poll results for the Maori Party, New Zealand First and United Future were largely unchanged on their results last time around when they were registering between 1 and 3 per cent support.
Today's poll has National leader John Key ahead of Prime Minister Helen Clark in the preferred prime ministerial stakes with Mr Key on 35 per cent support compared to Miss Clark's 29. Mr Key has recently had his first big trip to Washington. With the kiwi dollar still high, the pessimists are outweighing the optimists.
When asked about the economy, 31 per cent said they believed the economy would get better, 28 per cent felt it would stay the same while 41 per cent believed it would get worse. The poll sampled 1000 voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 per cent.
