Check the map Communities across Norfolk are being given the chance to set up life-changing projects as part of a new campaign. Project Butterfly is an initiative organised by the EDP, Norfolk police and Virgin Money aimed at benefiting the county s neighbourhoods, improving public safety and tackling the root causes of anti-social behaviour.
The campaign is fronted by local hero Jon Thaxton, British lightweight boxing champion, and comes as Norfolk police introduces its Safer Neighbourhood scheme which will see every community allocated its own team of officers. Nominations are invited from individuals, groups or businesses for a project that will improve neighbourhood conditions. Virgin Money will then fund the labour and materials to make the dream a reality for one community.
EDP marketing manager Simon Tomlinson said: The EDP is committed to supporting and helping develop the local community, and Project Butterfly with the Safer Neighbourhood scheme and the generosity of Virgin Money gives us that opportunity to really make a difference. The EDP, Norfolk Police and Virgin Money have pulled together to make this happen and we hope local communities will do the same. As Project Butterfly reaches its finale, staff from the EDP and Norfolk Police will join Virgin Money will join with the residents of that community to work together to make their vision a reality .
Over the coming year communities across the county will have the opportunity to participate in this geographically targeted campaign. In the first phase we are inviting communities in the north and east of the county to submit their entries. Possible ideas include setting up a carnival club, gardening makeovers, setting up a sports club or a makeover of a sports, social or youth club.
These projects could bring together all ages and groups from across the community. Chief Supt Charlie Hall said: Project Butterfly is a great example of our vision for Safer Neighbourhoods. We are here to deliver where neighbourhoods have a need, but to do so effectively we need to work side by side with residents, partners and businesses, addressing the root causes of problems such as anti-social behaviour, crime and disorder by looking for positive solutions.
Mr Hall said he was delighted the force will be able to publicly make a difference to a neighbourhood in the area through this competition . I hope that it will encourage other businesses or individuals to offer their support elsewhere , he added. Karin Pink corr , Virgin Money s charity and community manager and a member of the judging panel, said the company takes its role in the community and the social sector very seriously.
She added: Project Butterfly is an extension of the work we already undertake. We feel this is an opportunity to create something really special which will have a lasting effect on a whole community. Suzie Hosier, the police s commercial partnerships officer, said : Working with the community is high on most businesses agenda, not just our own, and we recognise that by joining forces we can make a stronger impact.
We are delighted to be working with the EDP and Virgin Money, not just because they are strong brand names in Norfolk, bit because they also have the welfare of our communities at the heart of their company ethos. There will be one overall winner but it is hoped the campaign will provoke discussion and encourage other businesses and residents to come forward and do their bit.
