A man accused of abducting a Kansas teenager from a store parking lot and killing her was charged Tuesday with rape and aggravated sodomy, making him eligible for the death penalty. Edward Hall, 26, already had been charged with kidnapping and murder in the death of Kelsey Smith, 18. The addition of rape and sodomy charges make the slaying a capital crime under Kansas law.
Smith was kidnapped June 2 from the parking lot of an Overland Park Target store, where grainy surveillance video showed her being confronted by someone and pushed into her car. Her body was found four days later in a park about 20 miles away in Missouri. Johnson County prosecutor Phill Kline said Hall's $5 million bond had been revoked.
Kline said he had spoken with Smith's family but had not yet decided if he would seek the death penalty.
