Mica, zinc and iron oxide are among the key ingredients in mineral-based makeups, that promise a fresh-faced look. The mineral-based cosmetic category, which was originally limited to face powders and foundation-powder combinations, is newly expanded to include mineral-based cream concealers, eye shadows, eyeliners, blush and mascara. The sheer coverage, and matte, to glowing finish of many mineral-based cosmetics is putting fashion's fixation with shiny, shimmering makeup products on hold, at least for the moment.

"Shimmer is over," says Joanna Schlip, a Los Angeles-based, celebrity makeup artist, who has recently worked with celebrities Jordin Sparks, Avril Lavigne and Ellen Pompeo. "A luminous, glowing healthy looking finish on the skin, is what's in ..

. and this is one of the reasons that mineral based has become a growing trend amongst many celebrities," says Schlip, who is also a spokesperson, for Physicians Formula cosmetics. Minerals are already a staple ingredient in most cosmetics, but mineral-based products attempt to screen out as many non-mineral ingredients as possible, offering a formula that may be better tolerated by sensitive skins that are prone to breakouts.

The sheer degree of coverage and soft glow provided by mineral-based makeup, is partly achieved by eliminating talc, normally a primary ingredient in powder-based cosmetics of all types, as well as baby powder. Although talc is technically a finely ground form of a mineral, magnesium silicate, some makeup artists feel that makeup products offer a more natural look without it. contributes to a very opaque, flat finish on the face that can get cakey, when reapplied.

" Talc-free formulas are lightweight and provide a more luminous finish," says Schlip. To fight shine from oily skin as well as shine produced by summer's heat and humidity, mineral powders can be applied frequently, with less likelihood of cakey buildup. Other tips for facing up to summer's heat and humidity, include adopting a minimal approach to makeup application and use of powder-based products.

"Step back and take a good look in the mirror ...

Most women have better skin than they think they have ...

There's no reason to wear makeup like a mask. Build up additional layers of coverage only where needed, which for most women, is on red blotchy areas, brown sun spots, and under the eyes," says Schlip. According to Schlip, the light texture of of talc-free mineral-based makeup also makes it ideal for makeup application for HDTV, as it is less obvious on camera.

When choosing foundation and face powder, for reality TV, or for real life, match them to your skin tone as closely as possible. Add colour with blush and bronzer, and by choosing eye shadows that complement your eye colour. "Choose complementary eye shadows, by looking at a colour wheel.

Look across the colour wheel from your eye colour to determine a complementary colour," recommends Schlip. If your eyes are green, look at the opposite side of the colour wheel and choose red-based tones, such as pink, rust or purple. If your eyes are blue, look across the colour wheel to orange, and select related shades, such as peach, bronze, rust, brown and gold.

"Both sheer nude, and sheer, colourful lip colours are on-trend, this summer," says Schlip. Bronzer continues to be a summer staple, when it comes to adding a sun-kissed glow to the skin. "Polish your look with a sheer dusting of bronzer, such as the Physicians Formula Talc-Free Mineral Wear Bronzing Veil," recommends Schlip.
