‘Busy Muscle Play’ can be anything from a game of dodge ball to a hip-hop dance class, just as long as it gets participants moving. The important thing is to learn physical activity is not only important for health, but it can be a fun way to spend their time and make new friends, with other participants. The system, which Heppert estimates will cost somewhere between $150 and $175, will come with an instructional DVD to show children and their parents how to make the most out of the product.

Heppert hopes it will encourage parents to find ways for the family to be more active as a whole. The idea for PARS first came to Heppert in 1992, but he had to wait for about 10 years until the technology caught up with his imagination. In 2002, he began to develop his concept and has since patented his idea.

In the fall of 2006 Heppert was accepted into the , an incubator for fledgling biotech companies, and is working on a functioning prototype of his system. “They met our criteria for the type of companies we’re looking to incubate,” said , Executive Director of VBDC. Lohr, through the VBDC, works closely with start-up biotech companies to help them find the resources they need to succeed.

“We don’t graduate them until they have a working business plan and a minimally working prototype.” So far the incubator has provided Heppert with VCU School of Business graduate students to help develop a business plan. The incubator is assembling an advisory board that will meet with him on a regular basis to help guide him through the process.

Heppert thinks he probably could have managed without help from the VBCD, but is very glad to have the assistance. “Eventually it would have gotten done,” said Heppert. “But going through the program will have shortened the process by years.
