by Molly Snyder Edler 12, 2004 at 5:22 a.m. Do your kids need their "hairs" cut?

Before you reach for a bowl and a pair of Fiskars, consider a professional haircut at a salon designed specifically for shorties. Silver Spring Dr., makes the experience -- which is sometimes traumatic for kids -- almost as much fun as an afternoon playgroup.

The Whitefish Bay salon has six haircutting stations that kids can choose from, including two "car chairs" and a horse. Or, kids can sit on a parent's lap if they prefer. All six stations have DVD players and about 60 movies and programs, ranging from Barney to Sponge Bob.

The cost of a haircut is $17.50 for anyone under 9; $20 for those 9 and older, and it includes a wash. One senior stylist charges $20 and $22.

Just Kidding's hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.

m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Another option is the new Kid-Do's Children's Salon in Menomonee Falls, N81 W15042 Appleton Ave. Owner Tammy Vander Heyden was a licensed cosmetologist for 18 years before the mother of two opened her salon this summer. Kids cuts are $15, or $18 with a shampoo, cut and style.

Kid-Do's also offers "child's first haircut" certificates for baby books, up-'dos, braids, highlighting, manicures and pedicures. They also offer "Glamour Partyz" for kids ages 5-12. "Kids may think that 'cutting' the hair will hurt, so we try to say we are going to 'trim' your hair today," says Vander Heyden.

To make the process even less frightening, Kid-Do's offers two specialty hydraulic chairs disguised as a yellow bug car for the little ones and a larger green Jeep for the older kids. They also have buckets of toys and bubbles. "We also count or say the alphabet (while trimming the hair), these are great ways to get the kids to focus on something other than the haircut," says Vander Heyden.

And yes, parents can get a trim, too. "You only have to be a kid at heart to get your hair cut here," she says. Call (262) 251-8060 for more information or to make an appointment at Kid-Do's.
