Goodwill has eyed Port Orchard for years, but only found a suitable location when the Big Lots at the mall closed in January, said Betsy McFeely, Seattle Goodwill's public relations director. Goodwill wanted another site in the county after the success of its Bremerton store, on 4209 Wheaton Way, she said.
The new store will employ 45 people to work its 15,000 square feet of retail space, and its donations and production center, said Nicole Roberts, director of retail stores for Seattle Goodwill. Goodwill officials will cut the ribbon at 8:45 a.m.
on Thursday. When the store opens at 9 a.m.
, it will offer free gifts to the first 250 people who come in, drawings for prizes such as DVD players, and a silent auction, Roberts said. Since May 2, a trailer in the parking lot has been taking donations, including numerous piece of clothes and furniture, Roberts said. Its 1720 SE Mile Hill Road location puts the store less than a mile away from some of Port Orchard's similar thrift and consignment stores, including St.
Vincent de Paul, 1209 Bay Street, and Vintage to Vogue, 1351 Bay Street. Goodwill opens about 100 stores each year, said Christine Nyirjesy Bragale, director of media relations for Goodwill Industries International. In 2006, Goodwill had 2,146 stores and made close to $3 billion in revenue.
