"Spy Hunter" is back on active duty. Paul W. S.

Anderson has signed on to direct and relaunch Universal Pictures' action project, which is based on Midway Games' popular 1980s arcade game. Chuck Gordon and Adrian Askarieh are producing. Jeremy Bolt, Anderson's partner at Impact Pictures, is also producing.

Anderson will pen a treatment that will serve as a blueprint for "Hunter's" script, after which a writer will be brought on board. "Hunter" is an action/driving game featuring the G-6155 Interceptor, a fictitious car that is beset by a wide array of enemy vehicles. John Woo had previously been attached to direct a big-budget version of "Hunter," which would have also starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

That version never got out of the garage due to budgetary reasons. Gordon and Askarieh are in production on video adaptation "Hitman," starring Timothy Olyphant, for 20th Century Fox. "Hunter" brings Anderson back under the wings of Universal, where is already prepping the car-themed "Death race," a remake of 1075 Roger Corman classic "Death Race 2000.

" Jason Statham is starring in the movie, which goes before cameras in August. Anderson and Bold are also producing "Castlevania" with Crystal Sky as well as "Driver" from Constantin. Both are set up at Rogue.

Anderson is repped by Ken Kamins at Key Creatives.
