Jos e put some of his very good music on an album called , and that album made many people happy. Like, 700,000 people, all over the planet Earth! That is a lot of people!

Waits and Dalai? Apparently so, as Tom Waits, Philip Glass, Kronos Quartet, and, yes, the Dalai Lama himself all feature on Healing the Divide: A Concert for Peace and Reconciliation. s document of the September 2003 live performance of the same name at Lincoln Center s Avery Fisher Hall in New York City sees release July 10.
The benefit concert was the culmination of the Dalai Lama s 20-day U.S. tour (just imagine those hotels!
), and it also included performances by Anoushka Shankar, the Gyoto Tantric Choir, and some other artists whose names we can t pronounce. Waits contributions includes the previously unreleased Diamond in Your Mind and Way Down in the Hole (aka the song that plays over The Wire s opening credits).
According to a press release, Proceeds from the sales of the CD will benefit (a non-profit organization Richard Gere formed in 2001 in order to aid humanitarian crisis) and its Tibetan Health Initiative, which provides health insurance to Buddhist monks and nuns.
Translation: When you buy a copy of this CD, you provide one year of health insurance for an impoverished monk or nun in a refugee settlement.
Waits had the following to say about his participation in the event: I m no fool. It s a spiritual insurance policy.
Hell, at my age, the next group I put together, everyone may be playing a harp. All kidding aside, I owed His Holiness a favor. He did all my papers in school.
reports that Healing the Divide will also have a DVD release. is following the of the first two albums with reissues of the band s third and fourth LPs-- Learning to Crawl and Get Close-- on June 5. Though both reissues are confined to a disc apiece, each still contains various demos, live recordings, and alternate versions of songs as bonus tracks.
Originally released in 1984, Learning to Crawl featured a revised Pretenders lineup following the drug-related deaths of original guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and original bassist Pete Farndon. Thus, the album has Robbie McIntosh on guitar and Malcolm Foster on bass.
Get Close was originally released in 1986 and showcases a greater variety of contributors, including Indian violinist L.
Shankar, Elvis Costello bassist Bruce Thomas, and one-time James Brown and David Bowie bandleader Carlos Alomar. The album s closing track is a cover of Jimi Hendrix s Room Full of Mirrors .
Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde continues to tour with the Pretenders, who have quite a few summer tour dates scheduled for July and August.
They begin July 19 in happening Bridgeview, Illinois. Eleven years in , and never once donned so much as a skirt live.
I had this rule, it was kind of like an anti-fashion thing, she revealed to Pitchfork recently.
Being in a band, I always had this thing about not wanting to be pushed forward as the only female in the band, so to go along with that I just wanted to blend in-- I didn t want to go walking around on stage dressed in ridiculously, overtly colorful dresses or anything like that.
Times have changed. Now that I m doing my own thing, I thought Oh, to hell with it, I ll do whatever I want!
Indeed, Pitchfork caught up with Pollock via phone whilst she was in the midst of, in her words, introduc[ing] a bit more flair into my wardrobe -- shopping for dresses mid-tour at a retro clothes shop in Birmingham, England.
At that point, Emma had spied a couple of 60s dresses that have got ridiculous print on them that I normally wouldn t wear in everyday life-- but I think on stage they would work.
According to Pollock, the softening of her anti-fashion stance comes with the territory of being a solo artist.
It s much much easier to be personally understated within a band...
but the solo thing automatically forces attention onto me as an individual. There s an element of it which is visual, and I suppose I feel a bit more comfortable with that now than I did before.
Indeed, the change in wardrobe reflects on Pollock s solo debut, Watch the Fireworks, out this September on .
It s totally, unashamedly pop and it doesn t pretend to be anything else, said Pollock.
To be completely honest with you, I m just a sucker for great pop songs. I love Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark-- a lot of the classic female singers.
There was just something fresh about them, and their voices just seem to transcend anything else that you hear nowadays. But most importantly the songs-- just the way that they re effortlessly melodic, great production, really, really great fun. Comrade Yeltsin may have passed on (though he s ), but at least we have one left to strike fear into the hearts of Europeans everywhere.
No, not . Try the -signed, monolithic Japanese trio behind last year s envelope-obliterating .
In a tour of truly epic proportions, Boris will descend upon Europe next month, joined on occasion by like-minded earth-rattlers like Isis, Pelican, and Oxbow.
Indeed, the Boris/Isis/Oxbow leg that hits former Soviet satellites in mid-June is being billed as Love s Holiday . Now isn t that just adorable?
Do you have what it takes to lay crushing rhythms behind heavy jams like It Was There That I Saw You and Homage ?
Do you relish smashing your instruments to bits on a nightly basis? Can you put up with ? What if he ?
If you re still with us, you might be just the thing need right now. The Texan blockbusters have set their sights on a European tour in August and September (exact dates coming soon), but usual kit-crasher Doni Schroader can t make the trip. This is where you come in.
Send an email to if you think yourself fit for Doni s shoes. It s a temp job, mind you, but it s one to tell the folks about.
In other Trail of Dead news, the boys have been working on composing songs for a new record, as Trail-blazer and recent Austin expat Conrad Keely wrote last month on the band s .
That new record would be the follow-up to last year s .
Typically cagey Keely also railed on Trail of Dead s -- the Cat Solen-directed Naked Sun -- calling it atrocious and a worthless piece of crap and explaining that the band did not approve it and had nothing to do with it whatsoever. Ah well, so much for being .
But hey! Conrad also says touring Europe is fun. He also promises a U.
S. tour, but only to keep our American booking agent happy. Aw gee guys, thanks!
The band also recently posted a dance remix of Naked Sun on their . The revamping comes courtesy of one DJ Cat, who, we assume, is not related to Cat Solen. Liars, Lightning Bolt, Oneida on Mighty Robot DVD The Brooklyn-based underground performance space / art collective Mighty Robot threw some of the best shows and parties New York City saw at the beginning of this young millennium, introducing the world to bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio, Les Savy Fav, and more.
Mighty Robot met a premature end in late 2005, but thanks to the power of digital media and the fine people at , it s not forgotten. On the DVD Sleep When You Are Dead, out June 30, Contact has collected 73 minutes of performances from various Mighty Robot events in and around their Williamsburg space. Bands representin include Liars, Lightning Bolt, Oneida, Ex Models, Coachwhips, Hospitals, Sightings and more.

Midnight Room, the second Sub Pop offering from the psych-popping safety advocates, will come, sheathed in protective plastic, on June 19.

Once again curated by Michael Mayer, the creation of Speicher 3 was also helped along by Kompakt vet J o rg Burger. Choice cuts by Superpitcher, DJ Koze, and Mayer himself (with Kompakt co-honcho Wolfgang Voigt) are among the highlights of the mix, heavy on the microhouse and easy on the filler.
