Overpopulation and overfamiliarity have yet to affect the Land of Far, Far Away. "Shrek the Third" is a worthy successor to its predecessors, and even if the novelty is gone, the wit is pretty intact.
One has to wonder whether the TV Christmas special "Shrek the Halls," Broadway's "Shrek: The Musical" and a fourth feature set for 2009 will prove too much ogre too often.
But this go-round isn't likely to disappoint anyone, except those who think the Gingerbread Man doesn't get enough screen time.
"Shrek the Third" concerns itself, intentionally no doubt, with the fact that the unlovable ogre has become domesticated and civilized, so much so that Princess Fiona's froggy father (the voice of John Cleese), now on his death pillow, wants Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) to succeed him on the throne. (I guess they'll just have to build a bigger throne.
) Shrek wants none of this. He wants to return to the swamp with Fiona (Cameron Diaz), but she's not sure that's the right move. Unknown to her hubby, she's got a little ogre in the oven.
Plus, there's villainy afoot. The spurned Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), having failed to clean up in dinner theater, is plotting a Kerkorian-like coup. Shrek's only possible salvation is in the recruiting of Fiona's half brother, Artie (Justin Timberlake), who lives in a land known as Worstershire.
So with faithful Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and ever-gallant Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) as his crew, Shrek sails off on a perilous journey. He is rewarded for his effort by the whining of a petulant Artie, a kid who can't even stand up to a little jousting from Lancelot and the lads.
It's up to Shrek to teach the kid a few things about the world, which is where director Chris Miller and his own court of talented writers and story artists get to inject the themes of fatherhood and maturity while still injecting enough "Knights of the Roundtable" lore to give "Shrek the Third" a sturdy if understated hero-journey path.
Still, much of the fun is taking place back home, where Prince Charming is rounding up a hall-of-infamy takeover crew that includes Captain Hook (Ian McShane) and Cyclops (Mark Valley). Fiona surrounds herself with better-known princesses like Cinderella (Amy Sedaris), Rapunzel (Maya Rudolph), Sleeping Beauty (Cheri Oteri) and bossy Snow White (Amy Poehler) as she awaits the blessed arrival.
"Spider-Man 3" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" suffered greatly from the sequel syndrome of stuffing in new characters and plots.
"Shrek the Third" manages to accomplish it without losing sight of the series' primary appeal, the snappy subversiveness with which it upends fairy tales, nursery rhymes and legends. But at 92 minutes, some characters are bound to be slighted, and except for the Gingerbread Man, the primary victim is Donkey, who loses screen time and too much of his toothy bite.
On the other hand, if the producers decide that a spin-off would be preferable to more chapters with Shrek in the fore, I would like to put my vote in now for a Puss in Boots movie, a swashbuckler where some real fur would fly.
Somewhere in "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," we suspect, is a kitten worth dueling for.
