But when they get busted, those cars get seized, and the York County Drug Task Force is about to auction off some top-of-the-line vehicles confiscated from drug dealers and users.
A 2004 Hummer H2 along with BMWs, a Lexus and a low-mileage Acura are just some of the 70-odd vehicles that will be auctioned off at the task force's semi-annual sale set for Memorial Day.
"We have a lot of high-end vehicles this time," said Detective James McBride of the York County District Attorney's office.
While cars seized from drug dealers and users are often pretty banged up, McBride said that for some reason the task force has ended up with a number of cars in good shape for the upcoming auction.
Most of the money raised from the sale of most of the seized cars will be used by police to track down more drug dealers.
But proceeds from the jewel of the upcoming Memorial Day auction, the Hummer H2, will go to the state Attorney General's Office to assist people who have been victimized by scam
also be selling two Mustangs used for quarter-mile street races and a Kawasaki dirt bike.
Digital cameras, camcorders, DVD players and laptop computers that have been seized by police will also be sold at the auction, said McBride.
The auction will start at 10 a.m.
Monday at the Schaad Detective Agency at 1114 Roosevelt Ave. in West Manchester Township and accepts only cash or other certified funds. If the item for sale is $300 or less, full payment must be made on the day of the auction.
Anyone buying an item for more than $300 must pay at least $300 at the time of the auction and the remaining amount within seven days.
