Fujitsu Launches Industry’s First Single-Chip IC for Full HD H.264 Video Processing with Embedded Memory

Sunnyvale, CA, May 23, 2007 Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc.

(FMA) today introduced the latest in its family of highly integrated video processing devices that support the H.264 format. The new MB86H51 is an enhanced version of the Fujitsu MB86H50 for HD (1,440 X 1,080), which was demonstrated at the International CES 2007 in January.

(See related press release, ). The new device can compress and decompress full high-definition video (1,920 dots x 1,080 lines) in real time using the H.264 format.

This is the industry’s first single-chip device for full HD H.264 high profile version 4.0 video processing that incorporates embedded memory.

The MB86H51 also compresses and decompresses audio in real time by utilizing formats such as the MPEG-1 Audio Layer. “This new device enables high image quality recording, playback, and transmission of full high-definition video for consumer or industrial applications, such as digital video cameras, hard disk digital video recorders (DVRs), and home network devices,” said Davy Yoshida, director of Business Development of Fujitsu Microelectronics America. “Digital AV equipment, such as video cameras, is moving to high definition formats.

We anticipate significant demand for products based on the highest definition specification, known as full HD.” High-Compression Technology, Embedded Memory, Deliver Compact Size and Low Power
The MB86H51 uses high-compression technology from Fujitsu Laboratories Limited to reduce the processing burden. A proprietary human vision - such as human faces or slow-moving objects - and increased compression to other areas.

The effect is to maximize image quality for the critical zones. This feature also makes it possible to reduce image size to between one-half and one-third the size of the MPEG-2 format with an equivalent level of image quality. The device contains two blocks of 256 Megabit memory (FCRAM) embedded on-chip.

The optimized design enables a smaller size of only 15mm squared and low power consumption of just 750 mW. The new chip is exhibited and demonstrated at ANGA Cable, a trade conference for cable, satellite and multimedia, to be held in Cologne, Germany, from May 22-24. The MB86H51 in 650-pin FBGA packages will begin sampling in July with a sample price of $295.
