The delay of the 2007 Microsoft Office package, which includes the Word processor, Excel spreadsheet and PowerPoint presentation software, marks the latest slip-up at Microsoft, which has been plagued by a series of postponements. Microsoft had already pushed back the consumer launch of Office in March to coincide with the delayed debut of its Windows Vista operating system. It postponed the release of its much-anticipated upgrade to Windows until after the crucial holiday shopping season to improve the system's quality.

Genpact, meanwhile, has set up a base in China. Similarly, two BPOs, WNS, Quatrro and Office Tiger have a centre each in Sri Lanka. IBM Daksh, on the other hand, has a presence in the Philippines.
Most BPO companies are foraying into locations in Asia for cost benefits centered on people or infrastructure while the European forays have more to do with developing multi-lingual capabilities and expanding on the near-shore and offshore models. When you talk about an overall package, India is still the most cost-effective but we would like to be a full service provider with a global footprint, Wipro BPO chief financial officer Manish Dugar told ET. According to industry experts, another reason for BPO service providers to look at cheap locations outside India is because Indias tax advantage disappears in 09, while in countries such as Malaysia, China, Vietnam and the Philippines, it is valid for another 10 years.
Meanwhile, Wipro BPO is evaluating sites in Brazil and Portugal as well. The companys software services arm acquired retail solutions provider Enabler with delivery centres in these countries. Expanding into different countries does not mean only attracting new business.
It also means keeping the existing clients safe with a special focus on business continuity. Wipro BPO plans to introduce its existing clients to the new site in Vietnam and then attract new customers there as well. Meanwhile, Raman Roys Quatrro, after setting up operations in Sri Lanka, is said to be headed to the Far East.

Of this, 3,900 have already been added in the first quarter and another 2,800 offers have been made, he added. The company has plans to expand in emerging geographies like China and eastern Europe. Giving a snapshot of the past year, Mr Ramadorai said that the company has won some big contracts which will generate Rs 1,000 crore in the next few years.
The company added 303 new clients in 05-06 taking the total number to 929. However, 95% of the business came from existing clients. The company is experiencing fast growth in Latin American and APAC regions and the emerging economies contributed around 14% to FY06 revenues.
