Here it is, the 4K camcorder, tucked away in its crimson booth at NAB. In addition to showing the camcorder, the company also announced a smaller camcorder it will call "Mini Red" shipping at an unspecified date, a line of 4K projectors, and a not-quite-complete digital cinema camera that's still in Beta, yet "nearly ready." More details later mdash;take a gander at these pics, hot from the show floor.

Getting our hands on the camera, we noticed it's not as heavy as we thought it would be due to the carbon fiber construction of its rail mounting system. It's small, about the size of a normal prosumer video camera with a fixed lens. Hang a lens up front on the Red One, and it's a bit bigger, but still surprisingly small.

The grips were quite knarly, like off-road tires or hand grips on a BMX bike. It's extremely configurable.
Speaking of lenses, Red will offer a 5-lens prime kit for $19,975 available in Fall 2007, consisting of 15mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm lenses, and all have an f/1.

9 aperture except for that 15mm lens, which will be f/2.8. There will also be an $6500 18mm - 50mm f/2.

8, available this summer, according to Red. Finally, there's an f/2.8 300mm for $4950.

There was some worry on our part, after the camera delays, and after the prototypes were nearly lost to thieves last year. So we're happy to see it taking off like this. Congrats to Ted Schilowitz, and his team.

The plot thickens in the HD consumer camcorder arena, where now Panasonic tops itself with a true 1920x1080i upgrade to its now already-obsolete HDC-SD1 and HDC-DX1 HD , calling this latest pair the and .

They're both recording in that beloved compression scheme that's so squeaky-clean and compact, with the SD3 using a high-capacity SDHC flash card (good for 90 minutes of video) and the hump-backed DX3 using an old-timey DVD, which we can certainly do without.

Everything's easily accessible using one hand (just your thumb, really) and the interface is pretty neatly arranged.

The compact size and hand grip make you feel like you've got a really solid grasp on it. But the one gripe I have is that the four-way navigation joystick is a smidge too far to the right, so when you manipulate it with your thumb, you kind of lose your grip and all of the weight shifts to the strap. And with a camera that costs as much as the SD1 does, it's not a comfortable feeling.

Speaking of cost, has cut the price by $200, so it and its DVD-based counterpart, the HDC-DX1 now both run $1299. Not cheap, but hey, we'll take what we can get, especially with video as sharp as it was. Picture and number overload after the jump.
