"Loteria cantada (Singing Lottery)" is based on a popular Latin American game that is similar to bingo, but uses cards with colorful pictures of everything from dancing skeletons to horned devils, the singer said at a press conference earlier this week. "We wanted to bring a fresher, freer vision to things," said Downs, who fuses her mother's traditional Mexican music with U.S.

popular music she learned from her American father. When she was growing up, Downs split her time between Minnesota and the southern Oaxacan town of Tlaxiaco. The DVD also contains a short film by her father, interviews with Oaxacan painters, and a short documentary on her concerts in Mexico, Spain, Germany, England and Hong Kong.

Downs' popularity mushroomed after she appeared in "Frida," the 2002 film about the life of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Salma Hayek starred in the movie.
