Maybe this is the Indians' year. Manny Ramirez hit a drive to right-center field with David Ortiz at first that bounced high off the wall for a single. Ortiz, running on contact, scored easily on the play.

Ramirez immediately began pointing to the outfield in the belief that he had hit a home run. Umpires conferred and ruled that the ball had not hit above the yellow line at the top of the wall. Red Sox manager Terry Francona argued his case but got no satisfaction.

The ground rules at Jacobs Field say the ball has to clear the yellow line. Replays shown on the televisions scattered around the auxiliary press box in right field showed that Ramirez might have been indeed correct. His drive appeared to have hit on top of the wall just beyond the yellow and then bounced back into play.

C.C. Sabathia struck out Mike Lowell on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning and avoid further damage.
