He later used power of attorney over her accounts to transfer money to himself. Mr Jenkins said that after his long- term partner s illness, he was lonely and ripe for the picking . Mr Jenkins said Cryer, of previous good character, had lived a blameless life until meeting Maureen Edwards and had also cared well for his seriously ill wife.
He was scathing about Ms Edwards, who was not represented at yesterday s sentencing hearing. He said, Why is it Maureen Edwards is completely without taint or complaint against her? What woman with a shred of decency would accept the gift of a home in the Midlands paid for by somebody else s money from a man she had described to the police as a fat old git .
Mr Davis told the court efforts were being made to repossess the house in Loughborough which Maureen Edwards was living in. He added that the house was probably worth around 220,000 now and it would eventually be recovered and sold with the money going back to Mrs Edwards. He added that of the 360,000 stolen, only 65,000 was likely to be unrecoverable as some of the money had been transferred back to Mrs Edwards accounts.
In a final twist, Mr Jenkins said despite the communication difficulties suffered by Mrs Edwards, it was his instruction she wanted Cryer back home so he could continue caring for her. Sentencing Cryer yesterday, Judge Michael Burr said, You are responsible for taking money from a lady who was quite unable to care for herself, benefiting yourself and this other lady.
