Partners C.H. Breedlove and Ruth Cary confer on exact placement of the yellow ball for a critical stroke during a game in the Acadia Senior College Croquet League now under way at the Claremont Hotel.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR The Acadia Senior College Croquet Leage vigorously rolled along under perfect autumn skies on Saturday at the seaside court of the Claremont Hotel. Libby s Lobsters (Mette and Tom Watt) added two wins to their total and now stand at 3-l, in a virtual tie with the idle Harpo s Haddock (Ruth Cary and C.H.

Breedlove), who still stand at 2-0. Nelga s Newshells (Don and Sue Graf) hold down third place, and Archie s Anemone (Mark Campbell and Wanda Wright) have had some very close contests but are sitll seeking their first victory. (Teams are named after members of the croquet Hall of Fame Libby Newell, Harpo Marx, Nelga Young and Archie Burchfield, respectively).

Mark Campbell made yet another five-wicket run this week, while Sue Graf topped all contenders when she swished through six hoops on one turn and sent her partner through one on that turn as well. That equaled the top scoring single round of seven points achieved by Breedlove in week one. The star of the week, however, was Don Graf.

In the second game of the day on Saturday, he confounded the opponents on the second turn of play by hitting a ball when they thought he was in a hopeless position, thus breaking up their chance to make wickets. This hit in from downtown as it is called in croquet, was no fluke. Graf went on to make a total of four long shots out of his 12 turns in that game, which sealed the victory for his side.

As the players begin to groove their strokes and get the feel for the finer points of strategy, I look for some really exciting matches in the next two weeks, said league commissioner Larry Stettner. The public is invited to come to the Claremont from 9 a.m.

to 12:30 p.m. on Oct.
