The Danza Mexica Cuauhtemoc, above performing in Nogales, is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Mexica/Azteca culture, ceremonies and warrior dance. They will perform Saturday, Oct. 6 in Willcox.
Sometimes you find living treasures and you are not even looking; or you might say, "They find you." This was the case with Peggy Judd, who is currently working with her husband to finalize the entertainment at the Keiller Park Country Fair for Rex Allen Days. The City of Willcox recently sent representatives to the Arizona State Parks and Recreation Conference in Tucson.
This is an outstanding opportunity to learn how to improve our parks and our recreation programs. Judd attended a workshop for volunteer boards and commissions, where representatives from all over the state work together to share information and problem solve and then present their new ideas and successes to the group. Officials from the county and state were there to help find ways to implement these ideas.
This is a powerful session, with major players in the parks and recreation community and you will see results from this one meeting throughout your local and state parks. "There is really no way to describe the value of these conferences, although we try," said Judd. In November, after the Parks and Rec Commission has had a chance to review the material, she will be presenting some of the key information she learned to the City Council in November.
Two important things Judd felt compelled to attend at the conference was programming for Baby Boomers and the skatepark issue. There are populations in our community that are underserved, and these are two of them. We have another deserving community of neighbors who serve among us and help to build our community.
These friends and many of us, including Judd herself, have roots buried deep in Mexico. One of the outstanding components of this conference was a fantastic presentation and teaching by Aztec Dancers. They will be coming to Rex Allen Days this year and they will be sharing their message with you.
