HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Today) 10/4/07 – Actor Danny Glover and activist Mariane Pearl, wife of slain journalist Daniel Pearl, are two of the celebrity judges in a film contest looking for pieces about the American Muslim life. Pearl, whose husband was kidnapped in 2002 by Islamic extremists in Pakistan, is currently a columnist for “Glamour” magazine. In June, a film based on her memoir “A Mighty Heart” was released worldwide.
Angelina Jolie starred as Pearl. Organizers of “One Nation, Many Voices,” an online entry competition, believe submitted films will show the common human experience and challenge Muslim stereotypes in American culture. Featured categories include drama, comedy, documentary, animation / music, youth under 18, and short films 60 seconds or less.
Category winners will receive $5000, while the grand prize for best overall video will take home $20,000. Videos of the finalists will also air on LinkTV, a co-producer of the competition. LinkTV, which operates with the slogan of “television without borders,” is dedicated to providing global perspectives on news, events, and culture to American viewers.
The non-profit channel launched in December 1999. Film submissions are on-going through November 25, while Internet viewers can continue to vote through the end of the month. The judges will convene in December after the audience chooses the top videos in each category.
Glover, best known for his work in “The Color Purple” and the “Lethal Weapon” movies, is also an outspoken activist for equality and human rights. In 1998 he was appointed to serve on the UN Development Program. He now works as an ambassador for UNICEF.
