His great strength was as a communicator, but I think a ot of people have the wrong impression about that. It's not because of any skills or acting skills or anything like that, but because he believed so intently in the things he thought was important to the country and when you get right down to it the camera doesn't like I think the sincerity of his beliefs came through and he was steadfast in what he did. Now if someone wants to compare me to Ronald Reagan in that respect, I'd be more than privileged to have that honor, but that's the source of his strength and instead of looking to him as the political figure and making comparisons we really ought to concentrate on the source of that strength.
Fred Thompson's fiercest rival is not Mitt Romney. It's not Rudy Giuliani. It's Mr.
Expectation. There are so many expectations on Thompson to perform well and live up to the hype. Then you have the added pressure of being compared to Ronald Reagan.
It could be problematic. The way Thompson gets around this is to not only come up with big ideas and communicate them effectively, but at some point, he's going to have to lay out specific policy proposals. That will come soon but if he waits too long, the stories will be written about how he's all style and no substance.
Stay tuned.
