Issue #19.07 :: 09/12/2007 - 09/18/2007 Would you like some cheese with that? BY SUBMITTED TO THE METRO SPIRIT I ve had the opportunity while traveling to and from Savannah, and now on Davis Road, to see the construction people wasting my tax dollars doing nothing.
So much so, I ve contacted a taxidermist and asked him to taxidermy my body (upon death) in a standing position leaning against a shovel so my wife can secure some additional income should our investments fail. The interview may be a problem, but seeing the people they have working for them now, it should still work out for the family. The canal extension proposed by Cheeks sounds like a great idea.
However, there remain many obstacles to overcome. I would be more than pleased if the city just restored the Riverwalk to its glory days. Replant flowers and get rid of the weeds.
Bring back the family restaurants and activities, the free Sunday concerts at the fountain, the arts and crafts fairs, and, finally, rid the Riverwalk of gangs and graffiti. This alone will revitalize downtown at a fraction of the cost of a canal extension. Downtown Augusta has so much potential just begging to be exploited.
To the person who said Michael Vick s convictions were based on pure racism. Well, the race relations of this country are much worse now than they were in the past 50 years. Vick was a young man who was financially secure.
He got paid an insane salary for playing a sport and he would probably have stayed with this team until he retired. Vick could have anything he wanted in life, but he threw it all awa y. Some people call it racism.
I call it stupidity! I guess you Atlanta Braves fans got what you asked for another season where you acted like you had a team that was going to win. Guess what?
You lost. Bye, bye! The NAACP is a divisive organization.
Instead of building the black culture up, they spend all their money and energy trying to destroy the white culture. The NAACP says America should be color blind and we should unite and forget about the past, yet they constantly bring up slavery and play the race card. Those of us who love Augusta and want to be proud of her need to do all we can to support the canal project.
Can anyone explain to me why America, the breadbasket of the world, is importing food of any kind from China? How about that Falcons-Ravens football game on Friday night? Those Falcon quarterbacks showed a lot of skill.
They showed some moxie, too, standing in the pocket while confident of their teammates protection. They won. Go you Dirty Birds!
Has anybody else tried to log on to see about Coke rewards and find out the site doesn t work? Sometimes life is cruel and twisted; the rest of the time it s boring. Updates about the Ben Harbin DUI case seem to be kept under tight wraps and out of the news.
This is how it was in the days when Robin Williams was a state legislator and Williams close friend Phil Kent was editorial page editor at T he Augusta Chronicle . It should not surprise anyone that the Democrats are all caught up in the Hsu money-laundering scandal. Clinton claims to be shocked that Hsu is a fugitive.
Where has he been? Then he said that it s OK to keep the laundered money Hsu collected from people who are lower-middle-class contributors who cannot afford to make big contributions. And these are the same politicos who brag about their campaign finance reform.
The performance of the Democrats in this case is typical. The next thing will be Bush did it or made me do it. Although it appears that the Columbia County Commission listened to the people when it came to approval of another apartment complex, what makes anyone think the issue is closed?
In reality, the developer can put in another request for zoning in a matter of months and probably get it through. It s no surprise what a little money here and a little there can do for change when the builders commission is involved. Ron Cross will have a sincere change of thought when his builder buddies make an offer he can t refuse.
Of course, the builders will have to be part of the good old boy group! Here s a whine for the Republican Party for trotting out another raygun clone. This is just what the country needs, another politician who acts like he knows the answer.
Fred Thompson needs a brain scan to see if anything is up there. Do they make race cards in white and, if so, where can I get one? If you ask me, the whole commission is a waste of breath .
Whatever happened with the annual Labor Day Rest Fest concert Kicks 99 used to sponsor each year at Riverview Park in North Augusta? My wife and drove all the way to San Antonio just ride on their Waterway. If done the right way, this could bring a lot of needed money to the CSRA.
Build it and they will come. Hello, Jim Christian. I read the article you wrote about Michael Vick.
You are correct. You also made a very good point. Keep up the good work.
This is in response to the baggy pants debate. What a concept! We shouldn t stop with clothing why not form committees to decide the types of music we listen to, the cars we drive, the books we read and the news we hear?
To all you people backing Vick and playing that ever-lovin race card, anyone who can t take responsibility for their own actions whether right or wrong, black or white is weak. Grow a spine and admit when you mess up. The young lady sipping on the adult beverage three weeks ago is not a little girl.
I m sure she was chosen to pose for that cover simply because she is beautiful and also knows how to enjoy the finer things in life like, say, tequila. Come on old folks! Lighten up and enjoy a happy hour.
You don t wash your dog, you never take him to the vet, he has no shots and you can t spell spay or neuter. Plus, you don t take him in at night. Your dog is left outside 24/7.
A dog needs exercise like chasing cars but you are convinced that Michael Vick is the bad guy. Go figure! Why do authorities and commissions exist if they don t accomplish anything?
This is what s happened with the Augusta Canal Authority, the James Brown Arena and the Augusta Commission. I just read that Michael Vick s conviction is based on pure racism. I would like to know who or what John Rocker killed.
Here we go again. Troublemakers are causing another strike . Dave Barbee s e-mail is only offensive to those who want to be offended.
Are 500 blacks moving out of downtown and will 200 whites move into the area? What s wrong with saying that? Will that make the area whiter?
What s wrong with saying that? What about our First Amendment? No one was criticized in the e-mail.
Some people are just looking for things to raise a stink about and those who don t want to appear racist are forced to go along with the complaints. To those of you whom I have offended, for the record, I m 23 years old. I know I look young, but I didn t realize I held little girl status.
I m a full-time student. I work two jobs. I like to hang out with my friends and, yes, it s true, we like to drink alcohol (which is legal, by the way).
With all due respect, don t you have anything of importance to think about? I appreciate your concern, but you make Augustans sound like a bunch of bored, virgin-eyed, naysayers and it s just sad. With all the money that the Canal Authority gets, why can t they maintain the Augusta Canal in a feasible manner?
We should rename the Augusta Canal Andy s Creek and let people who care run the canal.
