Actress, writer and social activist Ruby Dee will be speaking and giving readings on the theme of Social Responsibility on Monday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m.
in the Cox Auditorium of the Alumni Memorial Building. The event is part of the Legends Lecture Series and sponsored by the Black Cultural Programming Committee . The lecture series was started in 2005 and some of its past speakers include Maya Angelou and Harry Belafonte .
Ruby Dee is a true legend in every sense of the word. It is important that all students, and in this case, particularly African-American students, are exposed to individuals who can serve as positive role models, points of reference, and sources of information and inspiration as they carve out the paths for their lives, said Chutney Walton, graduate adviser for the Black Cultural Programming Committee. Dee and her late husband, Ossie Davis, were distinguished civil rights activists and personal friends of Martin Luther King Jr.
and Malcolm X . Dee won an Emmy in 1991 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Special in Decoration Day, and recently was co-winner of the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for her audio book, With Ossie and Ruby: In This Life Together . The event is free and open to the public.
