Remember that scene from "Jurassic Park" where the T-Rex is chasing after Jeff Goldblum's car? Associated Press Jorge Sosa, called into a two on, no out jam last night, was outstanding in relief. Well for the past five days I've felt like I was a passenger in the back of that car and Willie Randolph was behind the wheel, holding steady at 35 mph and telling me this was just a natural part of the food chain.
Finally, last night the fellas stepped on the accelerator , with an 8-4 win over the Nats. Gritty Moises Alou led the charge, with three hits despite playing with tightness in his quad, and Jorge Sosa was stellar in relief. The five-game losing streak is over.
The free-falling, first-place lead went in the other direction for a change. And the magic number, stagnant for just about a week, continued its descent. Even the Cardinals -- how the mediocre but lucky have fallen -- managed to save a little face and hung an L on the Phillies last night.
There are 11 games to go and the lead is 2 1/2. That means if the Mets go 5-6, the Phils have to go 7-3 to tie.
