Firefox announced it has reached 400 million downloads, PC Pro reported today. The browser's popularity has reached 28% market share in Europe and 15% globally, PC Pro noted. The number is significant since Firefox/Mozilla has a deep working relationship with Google.

The fabled GBrowser came to the surface when a couple of senior employees at Mozilla joined the Google team. We Ubuntu hitting Dell a while ago, but Walt Mossburg's just now getting around to giving them a go apparently after a barrage of mail from readers, the same thing that prompted Dell to put 'em out. Evaluating it "strictly from the point of view of an average user," he thinks "still too rough around the edges for the vast majority of computer users" despite Ubuntu's rep as Linux for the (more) common man.

While he thinks it's slicker than most Linux distros, downloading codecs, no built-in DVD software, hardware issues (with an iPod and Kodak camera) earn it usability knocks, with an underlying subtext nudging people toward OS X at the end. Since Mossberg is a champion of ease of use above all else, the review's not exactly surprising. It won't have much (if any) impact in Linux or geek circles, but given his influence it could be a tipping point for people looking to leap from Windows who are tempted by Ubuntu but unsure if they have enough geek juice to run it.

What are you thoughts on the review? Fair or an overly harsh judgment? [All Things D] (Media-Newswire.

com) - NME.COM – the award-winning international 24/7 music website – today announces a deal with digital media giant iTunes to offer music fans worldwide unique NME Video footage, available to download free. The deal sees iTunes house over 50 NME Video podcasts, featuring exclusive interviews with some of the greatest names in music carried out across this year's festival season, including Foo Fighters, Iggy Pop, Kings of Leon, Muse, The Kooks, Dizzee Rascal, The Gossip, My Chemical Romance and many more.

IPC Ignite Digital editor-in-chief, Anthony Thornton, says: "NME.COM has always had its heart in video from way back in 1999. After a massive summer of interviews with some of the most exciting artists of 2007 music fans can leave their computers behind and see them on the move.

" This week also sees the launch of a new video channel on NME.COM, making available all of NME Video's exclusive interviews in one place for the first time on the site. With over 100 videos in the channel at launch, the new extension of the site brings music fans even closer to the artists they love.

NME editor, Conor McNicholas says "NME.COM is already famous for creating world-class video content and now we have a world-beating archive. Our new video services mean music fans will be able to mine a rich seam of interviews and more from all their favourite bands.

And this is only the start." NME's fantastic access to the very biggest names in music means that users of the site can access the kind of footage they won't find anywhere else. Recent festivals have seen NME interviewing top acts including Metallica just moments before they go on stage; making the video footage available to view by the time the band starts playing.

Videos like this, which have been made available on video sharing website YouTube, have already reached over a quarter of a million views following the Carling Weekend, proving the high demand music fans have for such unique content. IPC Ignite Digital senior producer Phil Wallis adds: "NME.COM is the fastest Music news service and I'm really excited about the way we're now able to bring our users even closer to the artists through all the great video work we're now producing.

" In 1999, three years after its launch, NME.COM hosted its first webcast with Suede live from Japan. Since then, the site has continued to be a pioneer, leading the way for music magazines in the digital space and helping it to become one of Europe's leading music sites.

About NME.COM NME.COM has earned worldwide respect for its rock music news and features, which are updated around the clock and has also been responsible for securing world exclusive first listens of new albums by Kanye West, Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones.

As laptops enter the initial phase in becoming a "closed" network new software is being added to student laptops requiring users to authenticate their information upon logging on.В  The authentication process which asks users to type in their username and password is called Network Access Control (NAC) and in time it will allow only the Sacred Heart community and other approved accounts to log into the network. In the initial phase of the project, the university community is prompted to log into the Sacred Heart network before being able to access resources through the university's internet connection.

В  In the final phase all laptops will be joined to the university's network yet they will also require that any computer logging on be updated with the latest security patches and updates. "Once this final phase is implemented, computers that do not have the latest updates and patches will be quarantined to a special network in which they will only be allowed to update their machine accordingly," said Ray McKeon, IT. "Then and only then will those computers be allowed to access the internet.

" "I like the laptops because when you close them they 'lock' so when people have to use your laptop, they need your password to log in.В  It's a plus," said Mike Ulatoski, freshman, Naugatuck. Erin Bulvanoski, junior, Ocean Port, N.

J. said she likes the laptops mainly because of all the new programs available. Contrary, students like Jennifer Reho, junior, Naugatuck like the security of the laptops but have been having problems with access off campus.

В  "It's kind of annoying," said Reho. The security requirements take place only on campus and members of the SHU community will find no differences connecting from any previous or new open access location.В  The program will affect every laptop on campus that has internet access.

While there have been some minor setbacks along the way, the IT staff is working meticulously to execute these security policies and procedures to the Sacred Heart University network. A lot of techie drama has gone on in the past week between Apple and NBC, so let me catch you up on it. NBC has decided not to continue selling its television shows through Apple's iTunes store, a move that has many people scratching their heads, myself included.

The move appears to be related to pricing and digital rights management. NBC's contract with Apple was set to auto-renew at the end of this year, but NBC had (and took) the option to terminate the agreement with 90 days notice. So what happened?

On Aug. 31 Apple released a statement indicating that NBC had made demands that the pricing of the shows be raised from the current $1.99 to $4.

99 per episode. Apple stated that it could not agree on this dramatic increase, and it was disappointed to see NBC leave iTunes. The very next day, NBC released a statement in response to Apple's in which they deny demanding such drastic pricing increases, insisting that it only wanted to institute "flexibility in wholesale pricing" and bundle shows together in more "attractive" ways.

Later, NBC insisted that Apple's fixed pricing is meant to benefit Apple's own iPod sales and not the content providers that make the devices worth buying. NBC announced that it plans to sell its shows on Amazon's new Unbox service, which allows customers to download television shows and movies in a way similar to iTunes. The plot thickens.

So what's the deal here? Does NBC expect to keep up its current level of TV downloads without help from iTunes? Doubtful, considering Unbox's downloads are Windows-only, and feature even more ferocious DRM protection.

Let's think about this. If I pay NBC and download its shows legally using the crash-prone Unbox, I still can't put it on my iPod? Does NBC really think this will prevent illegal downloading of its shows?

NBC may just be using "pricing disagreements" as an excuse to change the way it does business. Maybe it wants to focus more on advertisement-supported video streaming, something a TV network is probably more comfortable with. Or maybe it wants to keep Apple from dominating the video download industry like it does with music.

In either case, this is definitely creating some bad buzz around NBC, a network that performed poorly in ratings last season, despite garnering several Emmys. Through all of this drama, I say that most people probably give Apple, not NBC, the benefit of the doubt. You can't deny Apple's cool factor, especially with its newly redesigned line of iPods now out, bringing the count of video-capable iPods available this holiday season to three.

If you were NBC, would you really rock this gravy boat? companies. DMXNet Mobile complements DMXNet Manager, which provides printer rather than a mobile device.

12 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) today announced the release of the SimpliciTI(TM) network protocol, a proprietary low-power radio frequency (RF) protocol targeting simple, small RF networks (less than 100 nodes). SimpliciTI network protocol was designed for easy implementation with minimal microcontroller resource requirements. The protocol runs out-of-the-box on TI's MSP430 ultra-low-power microcontrollers and CC110x/CC2500 RF transceivers.

The next release of SimpliciTI will also support TI's CCxx10 System-on-Chips (SoCs). (For more information, visit http://www.ti.

com/simpliciti.) "A well engineered low-power RF protocol is critical in achieving low power consumption in end applications. The new SimpliciTI network protocol will enable customers to develop ultra low power systems with lower system cost and faster time-to-market," said Kobus Marneweck, general manager, low-power RF software development at TI.

Small, low-power RF networks typically contain battery-operated devices, which require long battery life, low data rate and low duty cycle, and have a limited number of nodes talking directly to each other. With SimpliciTI network protocol, MCU resource requirements are minimal, resulting in lower system cost for low-power RF networks. More complex mesh networks that need routing typically require 10x the program memory and RAM to implement.

Despite the modest resources required, SimpliciTI network protocol supports peer-to-peer communication, the option to use an access point to store and forward messages and range extenders to extend the range of the network to four hops. Future releases will add more sophisticated features such as frequency agility. SimpliciTI network protocol supports a wide range of low-power applications including alarm and security (smoke detectors, glass breakage detectors, carbon monoxide sensors, light sensors), automated meter reading (gas meters, water meters), home automation (appliances, garage door openers, environmental devices) and active RFID.

Since SimpliciTI network protocol is designed for simple RF networks, it offers a perfect complement to ZigBee(R), which is designed for larger networks with mesh routing and standardized profiles. SimpliciTI network protocol is provided as source code under a free license, without royalties. Developers are encouraged to adapt the protocol to their own specific application needs.

The stack can be downloaded at http://www.ti.com/simpliciti.

"As long as PC World or the settings, there is no void with the warranty. In cases where a customer disc first, unless this comes with the computer," said the spokesperson. Sun originally billed the technology as one of the standout features of BrandZ, puts the Linux applications in a separate container.

BrandZ is officially called Solaris Containers for Linux Applications. Sun initially billed the feature as a way to lure back Linux customers who had defected from the Solaris environment. However, most expect the feature to appeal chiefly to died-in-the-wool Solaris shops who have need for some Linux applications.

But techies enticed by another Solaris 10 feature, DTrace, might be more interested. DTrace lets programmers perform sophisticated debugging or system administrators find performance bottlenecks--and they can use production systems that don't have to be rebooted to enable special features. Linux containers on Solaris means developers can peer at their Linux software's inner workings, though not Linux itself.

(Linux fans are working on their own version of an equivalent technology.) Currently, Solaris containers can run Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 applications. Red Hat released RHEL 3 in 2003 .

But customers should take a deep breath before migrating apps: it's up to software companies to certify their software for use on the new foundation. The new Solaris also includes the PostgreSQL 8.2 open-source database, which runs about 20 percent faster than its predecessor and supports probing with DTrace.

And it includes faster network performance, the company said. Also Tuesday, Sun announced a partnership with VMware that permits central servers to run software remotely that otherwise would be run on desktop PCs. The software, called Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Software 1.

September 1, 2007 - Weber Systems Inc. of Smithtown, NY announces immediate availability of AccessYourBiz - Lean ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) System for manufacturers or distributors.

Lean Manufacturing is an initiative focused on eliminating all waste in manufacturing processes, resulting in a more competitive and profitable position in the applicable industry. Through a joint partnership, Scott N. Weber, V.

P. of Weber Systems, and Robert W. F.

Krause, an independent ERP/MRP/Lean Specialist, have developed a totally unique product to manage all functions of an organization with Lean Concepts imbedded into every aspect of the software functionality. The design focus of this software is to increase the net throughput of an entire organization from Sales to Shipping, including Lean Manufacturing. This software has taken Lean Manufacturing concepts and expanded these philosophies into every functional group within an ERP System.

According to Robert Krause, "This software is a totally new product with a totally new concept. It brings Lean Manufacturing principles to the highest level possible; to the ERP System software itself that actually runs the organization. Our Lean ERP System software replaces the typical ERP or MRP system with a comprehensive Lean solution for all functional groups and activities ranging from Sales to Shipping/Receiving.

In addition, it naturally supports the Lean Manufacturing initiatives of inventory reduction and increased inventory turns. Our software is designed to remove the manual software interface (Kanban Cards) and replace them with automated Kanban Replenishment. Our Lean ERP System Software will absorb the increased transactions resulting from the efficiencies obtained from a Lean Campaign.

Our mission statement is to reduce waste in every human endeavor." The software has a unique history in its creation. "I have managed numerous manufacturing companies," says Robert Krause, "in which I was responsible for virtually every department.

I have also implemented many ERP or MRP software packages, and I discovered that each one has its own personality or specialty. I also noted how these ERP or MRP systems interface with each of the various departments in an organization. I have witnessed the high level of frustration generated by poor user interface and the increased work load caused by inherent software inefficiencies.

For example, most ERP products incorporate a control personality with an audit trail thought process regardless of the overhead that is introduced, and as a result, forcing non-value added activities onto a corporation. My goal was to start from scratch, and develop an ERP software that would eliminate these issues, maximize efficiency and profitability for the entire organization." As Robert Krause explains, "After completing a successful Lean Manufacturing campaign of an electronic amplifier company, obtaining 20+ inventory turns, and reducing inventory by 86% and perpetual inventory was just 1% of annual sales.

All of which are excellent results but I realized that the next obstacle for a Lean efficient company was the actual ERP System Software itself. It seemed every ERP or MRP system had a Non-Lean conception. No matter what I did to work around these issues, I began to see clearly that it wasn't designed to be Lean and that it never would be Lean.

This realization led me to begin designing a Lean ERP Software System with all the tools built-in to support a Lean Campaign, while also reducing waste on the administrative side of the organization. I wanted to design-in the best of what I've seen in my experiences, and throw away all of the non-value functions." "To obtain this objective," Robert Krause continues, "I needed to align myself with a successful software provider with sufficient track record to assure customers that we will have the longevity to provide continued support after the sale.

I also needed an accounting professional to complement my manufacturing skills. After extensive research, I found Weber Systems Inc., a well-established software company providing accounting software solutions since 1988.

I arranged a meeting with V.P. Scott Weber, also a software developer.

At our first contact, he was not familiar with the term "Lean", but when I reviewed his package, I found it had a definite Lean personality. After developing a partnership, we began the laborious task of designing a new Lean ERP System incorporating the Lean philosophy into both the accounting and manufacturing functions of its source code. Two years later, we have numerous customers and excellent references.

Customers require an average of two to four weeks to complete implementation. We are definitely ready to announce a mature product to the Lean World with a new website and a new look," Robert Krause says with pride. Weber Systems Lean ERP Manufacturing Software is a totally integrated accounting and manufacturing software package containing full GL functionality, Bill Of Materials (BOM), job orders, Lean purchasing, Lean receiving, office Lean and Lean invoicing.

Other manufacturing features include lot control and back flushing. The Lean features include Kanban Inventory Control with a system-supported Kanban two-bin system. The software is currently retailing under $35,000 with multi-user license.

Spanair, one of the largest air carriers in Spain, has selected Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the platform of choice for several of its most important recent IT initiatives.

Spanair is utilizing Red Hat Enterprise Linux in two of the company's major projects. The airline is running its Carmen crew optimizer software, providing the airline with settings for crew managing, fleet scheduling and timetables, on three Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers. The Red Hat platform is also used in several of the airline's optimization stations that receive information provided by the central server to execute a number of processes.

Additionally, Spanair runs its Oracle 10g R2 database server on HP Proliant servers on Red Hat Enterprise Linux to host its data warehouse. When we began considering Linux within our infrastructure, we were looking for solutions for two main concerns: cost reduction and performance improvement, said Joan Pons, Spanair systems manager. Currently, Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers on an Intel platform provide good performance when connected to modern fibre channel drive arrays HP Eva 4000.

We are assessing the possibility of increasing the number of Linux servers in order to install other Oracle databases and new applications. Spanair has achieved significant cost savings with Red Hat solutions and through the Red Hat subscription model. With its use of Red Hat Network for support and updates, it has reduced the time and resources spent maintaining its systems.

The company has drastically reduced both hardware and software costs and has enjoyed great flexibility in tweaking its own solution and avoiding vendor lock-in. Well,I will say forex training is easier to start and harder to continue;depening on how you start. Many people may offer you some so called Forex trading systems”Infact, many people out there will claim to have the system that you can buy for a few thousand dollars. Actually, these systems are expected to make thousands of pips a month and never lose.

You may be shown “results” of their perfect system and you may be carried away. However,I tell you to relax my brother. What you need is more than trading software!

Before you buy any software you should note the following keys:* Although the system may work, however, traders lack the discipline to obey the rules that control the system. *Instead of paying thousands of dollars to buy a system, you can spend your time developing your own system for free, and use that money you were going to spend as capital for your trading account. *Thirdly, creating systems is not even defficult.

What is difficult is following the rules that you set when you do develop your system. Finally,Iwill advise you to do these two things:1) Visit www.babypips.

com The Forex market has been available to individual traders for nearly ten years now. In the past, it was only available to large financial institutions, such as banks, big companies, multi-national corporations and top currency dealers. However, now that it's open to individual traders, it's become a hot topic that many new traders are eager to learn more about.

So what is it? Forex is short for foreign exchange. Forex trading is trading in the currencies of the world through the Forex market, which is the largest financial market in the world.

In fact, it generates trillions of dollars of currency exchanges everyday. In addition, it operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making it the most liquid market in the world. Though trading starts in Sydney and ends in New York, Forex trading is not centralized in a single location.

This means you can trade in Forex market whenever you wish, regardless of the local time. A big advantage for traders, especially for those in search of optimal liquidity. Trading in Forex requires trades to done in pairs.

When you purchase a currency, you sell another currency at the same time. The most commonly traded currency pairs in the Forex market are: USD/GBP, USD/JPY, USD/CHF, and GBP/USD. As you can see, each currency is represented by three letters.

USD is the United States dollar. GBP is the British pound sterling. JPY is the Japanese yen.

CHF is the Swiss franc. The first three letters of a currency pair represent the currency you used for the investment, while the last three letters represent the currency in which you invested. For example, USD/GBP means you used United States dollars to purchase British pound sterlings.

To get started in the Forex market, you'll need a computer with a high speed internet connection, a funded Forex account, and a trading system. Most individual Forex traders will also use a broker, an individual or company that offers assistance to the trading process. A broker earns his money off a small commission from your trades.

In addition, although he'll be trading your funded account, all decisions will remain yours, assuming that's your wish. Here's what else a Forex broker can do for you: - Offer you advice regarding real time quotes. - Offer you advice on what to buy or sell based on news feeds.

- Trade your funded account basing solely on his or her decision if that's your wish. - Provide you with software data to help you with your trading decisions. Many experts say that you'll never really understand how Forex works until you've traded in the market.

To help you gain this experience without having to risk your money, you can set up a demo account at many of the Forex educational sites available on the Internet. You can also invest a modest amount for a Forex simulator, which allows you to explore a never-ending variety of market conditions and see the impact they've had on currencies in the past. There's no question Forex offers the trader the opportunity to earn a boat load of money.

However, as with any other form of trading, and particularly because this is such a liquid market, it does have its risk. No trader will make money on every trade, and even seasoned traders can get caught and face substantial loses if they aren't careful and wise. Article Source: http://www.

See Also: Best Iphone Download Sites - A Review Of Top Sites For Downloading Iphone Music, Movies, Games More With blogging becoming increasingly popular, there is also an increasing need for software to simplify the process of blogging. However, there are many different software packages available which can make selecting a package seem overwhelming.

Selecting a software package does not have to be difficult though. Bloggers can find websites which provide comparison charts for different software packages to simply the decision making process. These charts can save the blogger a great deal of time and effort because they compile a wealth of information into one convenient location.

The blogger may still need some additional information before using these comparison charts to make a decision. The article will provide insight into some of this additional information which may be useful such as how to understand the comparison charts, methods for comparing the software packages and tips on selecting a blogging software package. Blogging Software Criteria Those interested in starting or maintaining a blog should fully understand the blogging software criteria before attempting to compare software packages.

Some of the criteria it is important to understand include the minimum server requirements, data storage and the post editor. Understanding these criteria is critical to the process of comparing and selecting blogging software packages. The minimum server requirements refers to the minimum requirements for the server on which the software is to be installed.

In most cases the power and speed of the server is not relevant but instead it depends on the power and speed of the software necessary for the proper operation of the blog software. There may be additional costs associated with this software as well as additional license requirements. Data storage is also an important part of evaluating blogging software packages.

This may include options such as a flat file, a data file or a database. A flat file refers to storage options in which the full page is pulled each time the blog is requested by a browser. A data file refers to situations in which the data for the blog is inserted into a template when the blog is requested by a browser.

A database refers to storage options in which the necessary information is pulled from a flat file and inserted into a template when the blog is requested by a browser. The post editor is another criterion a blogger may want to investigate carefully before selecting blogging software. The post editor refers to the type of editor which will be used to fill in the posts listed on the blog.

These data entry methods may include options such as HTML or JAVA. Comparing Blogging Software Packages Bloggers who are seeking a blogging software package should carefully compare the different software packages available. This is important because obviously some software packages are superior to others.

It is also important because some software packages may be better suited for the needs of a particular blog than other packages. When comparing blogging software packages it is important for the blogger to first carefully consider the needs of the blog. This is important because it will help the blogger to realize which criterion is most relevant to his particular blog.

Selecting Blogging Software Packages After carefully evaluating blogging software packages, it is time for the blogger to make a decision and select one of the available packages. Ideally the blogger will have already compared important data such as storage space, server requirements and post editors. However, the blogger must also consider other factors such as cost and versatility.

Many blogging software packages are available free of charge while there are some which are available for purchase. The blogger will have to decide whether or not it is worthwhile to purchase a software package or whether free software packages will meet his blogging needs. After considering software criteria and cost, the blogger should consider viewing sample blogs created using a particular software package.

This is a good idea because these samples can provide a good indication of the capabilities of the software. This is because in general the higher the quality of the samples, the greater the capabilities of the software. Turn your little dumb blog into profits with Make Money Online Blogging .

OfficeTally.com is reporting that NBC plans to stream new episodes of The Office for free starting Sept. 27, the day of the Season 4 premiere.

That would be great pretty good news indeed, particularly for those who were planning to plunk down $34.99 for the season at iTunes. I guess this is NBC s way of recouping viewer support after parting ways with the digital download giant.

I m still annoyed that I won t be able to buy the episodes, because I can t imagine that NBC will devote the bandwidth to keeping the entire season available online all season long. More likely, older episodes will drop off after a time as new ones are added. Also, my desktop PC is a bit less portable than my iPod.

(Don t get me started about the time I lugged my CPU onto the treadmill.) Still, streaming is a great way to hook new fans who miss episodes and might not be bothered otherwise to jump in if they can t catch up. I watched a bit of 30 Rock this way last season.

That might have given that show some of the boost it got as its season progressed. UPDATED: This is unrelated but worth sharing. Steve Carell is profiled in the October issue of Elle Magazine.

You almost forget what a charming, self-effacing guy he can be. I m still sore at him for skipping out on the Season 3 DVD episode commentaries, but comments like this almost make up for it. On who makes him laugh right now: I think Sacha Baron Cohen is a really talented and funny guy.

And Dave Chappelle. I met him at a urinal at the NBA All-Star game, so that was my favorite trip to the men s room ever. on Wednesday, September 12th, 2007 at 9:34 pm by Brian Howard.

"It's a very simple, primal law in this industry, so Sun is focused on driving the number of applications up." Analyst Al Gillen of Framingham, Mass.-based IDC said it will be interesting to see how Linux application vendors view the new feature.

If they believe that the application runs differently within Solaris Containers than it does on Linux alone, even if that difference is subtle, it could impede users' adoption. "If a Container can't get 100% compatibility on the application, it becomes a unique environment," he said. "It still represents something of a barrier.

" Iams added that the ability to cap memory and processor resources per Container is good, but being able to ramp resources up and down as needed would be ideal. A financial services application, for example, might need only two processors most of the year, but during tax season it might need eight. If the application runs in a Container, the ability to ramp up these resources as needed is crucial.

Sun has added features to Solaris 10 regularly since the OS release in 2005. Solaris Containers and DTrace were two of the most lauded features of the original release, but enhancements such as ZFS and Logical Domains have come in subsequent upgrades. Since 2005, when Sun began the OpenSolaris project, it has used the arena to test new functions of the operating system before making them generally available and providing full support for them.

Other OpenSolaris functions that are being tested could eventually make it to the public under Solaris. One of them, for example, is a project called Crossbow . Roberts said Crossbow would build on the capability of Solaris to track network traffic at the Container level and delve into the realm of network virtualization.

Let us know what you think about the story; email Mark Fontecchio, News Writer. ProCurve Networking by HP this week launched a new core switch that networking pros and experts said rounds out the No. 2 networking vendor's core-to-edge switching architecture.

The ProCurve Switch 8212zl ties together ProCurve's networking solutions to unify network infrastructure, software, operation, management and support. Based on the HP-developed ProVision ASIC technology, the 8212zl is part of a standards-based unified core-to-edge solution that also includes the 6200yl, 5400zl and 3500yl switch series. Infonetics Research directing analyst Matthias Machowinski said the addition of the 8212zl will ease integration among ProCurve's edge switch offerings.

And at a time when many networks are homogeneous, he said, many companies are looking to one vendor for all of their networking gear. "Most companies are only using one vendor," he said. "Overall, networks are pretty homogeneous, according to our research.

" Infonetics last year found that roughly 80% of networks are single-vendor environments, Machowinski said. For ProCurve, the 8212zl fills a gap in completing a true core-to-edge offering. "With this introduction, customers now have a range of core and edge switches that are designed to make it easier and less expensive to operate converged and highly complex networks," he said.

"Because they are based on ProCurve architecture, they share common parts and improved management across devices not many vendors offer this. ProCurve is already the No. 2 player in the networking industry, and this should further enhance its position in the marketplace.

" ProCurve switch product manager Dan Montesanto said the 8212zl is a high-performance, scalable chassis core switch platform for Layers 2 through 4. It includes high-density Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and has high-availability features like hot-swappable, redundant management, fabric and power to ensure system continuity and enhance network productivity. Like most ProCurve offerings, the 8212zl also offers lifetime software and firmware updates, Montesanto said, and it has a lifetime warranty with standard next-business-day advanced replacement and phone and email support.

"It's based on their own architecture," Machowinski said of the core switch. "So you can see better integration between the edge and the core." "It's going to make a better proposition for new customers," he said.

"A customer isn't going to put Cisco in the core and have ProCurve at the edge. This integrates across the edge and the core." Rumours that downloadable BBC content is to arrive on the UK version of the Xbox Live Marketplace could well emerge as a solid push by Microsoft to help fulfil its vision of the Xbox 360 console existing as an entertainment hub for the whole family rather than just a videogames platform for hardcore gamers.

US-based subscribers to the Xbox Live Marketplace have been granted access to downloadable movie and TV media since November 22 of 2006. However, since that date, those situated across Europe (and various other international territories) have found themselves regionally restricted and, in the main, unable to access such content. That particular speed bump of global access, which has attracted considerable criticism, could soon to be traversed thanks to the appearance of download media courtesy of the British Broadcasting Corporation.

Reports flowing around the Internet are currently suggesting that Microsoft and the BBC are immersed in talks to bring Beeb content to the Xbox 360’s Live Marketplace service, which could see on-demand media opened for download in Europe. Speculative chatter is centred not on possible content but rather on whether the service will arrive with accompanying fees. The Guardian indicates that while video-on-demand content usually involves an associated access fee, any Live Marketplace BBC media will arrive as already paid for by the UK’s mandatory licensing charge, subsequently creating somewhat of a grey area for UK-based subscribers who are unlikely to want to pay twice.

Furthermore, the BBC’s own online iPlayer download service is in its beta development stage and will arrive capable of delivering a sizeable amount of media – for free. Whether or not BBC content does arrive with an accompanying charge system, Microsoft has already signed a deal with the BBC and various other European media companies back in 2006 that saw all parties partnering to develop their digital services – so chances are that current Xbox Live rumours are likely to become much more tangible in the near future. In the US, Microsoft already runs provides Xbox 360 subscribers with movie and TV content delivered by the likes of CBS, MTV, Paramount Pictures, and Warner Bros.
