ldquo;Lifetime Drinking Patterns and Beliefs rdquo; by Dr.
F. Zanjani. 1:45 p.
m., Copley Science Center, Room 101
Knowledge in the area of alcohol consumption predominantly generalizes from college-aged drinking patterns and the clinical classification of abuse and dependence. Although alcohol abuse/dependence is widely recognized as causing illness and eventually premature death, it is limited in scope to focus exclusively on identifying and treating patients with only the most severe problems.
Faika Zanjani, an assistant professor in the Graduate Center for Gerontology at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, will discuss how it may be beneficial to recognize pre-clinical risky alcohol patterns in addition to dependence, to manage poor drinking patterns early on and prevent later harm.
Zanjani rsquo;s research encompasses the general topic of developmental-health psychology, emphasizing four specific areas: aging, health behaviors, behavioral disease-management/prevention, and mental health and substance misuse. She has investigated health behavior domains mdash;smoking, alcohol, food consumption/preparation, exercise, seat belt use, dental care and medical care, across the adult lifespan (22-96 years old) and currently is working on clinical applications of health behaviors with respect to the mismanagement of mental health and substance misuse symptoms among adult and geriatric individuals in the realm of HIV-disease, primary care and Veteran Affairs Medical Centers.
This lecture, which is free and open to all, is sponsored by the First Year Experience course, ldquo;Wine, Science and Society, rdquo; taught by chemistry professor April Marchetti and French professor Aouicha Hilliard. 7:30 p.m.
