Produced by Dan Pelle Chauncey Welliver has fists of steel, a heart of gold and a body like Jello. Tipping the scales at 275 pounds, many consider him overweight and out of shape, but his record 32-2-4 speaks for itself. Welliver TKOed Corey Williams at 2:58 in the 6th round to win the Washington State heavyweight championship at Northern Quest Casino on May 30, 2007.
He started fighting on the streets of north Spokane in Hillyard, Washington and now battles the competition as far away as New Zealand. This project combined video of his fight and interviews and still photographs from when I first meet him at his gym. The editing took over 32 hours (I'm really slow at this) over a period of 2 weeks.
Colin Mulvany had the last slice at the film and cut many long clips down to the proper length. This was by far my most ambitious undertaking to date (my video career spans a total of 2 months). Chauncey, his brother Dewey, trainer Danny Thomas and all the rest of the boxing family made me feel more than welcome.
That is an imprortant key to telling a story. Having your subjects trust you enough so that they continue on with their lives unaltered, while you just push the record button.
