Two big TV movies stumble over the same problem: They don't know when to stop being cute.
They both also will premiere at 9 p.m.
Monday.
A E's Wedding Wars wants to make a statement in favor of gay marriage. But the movie has no edge.
So the commentary and humor turn tiresome. John Stamos plays a gay wedding planner who goes on strike -- and whose political stance captures the nation's imagination. There's no chance this precious movie will generate the same reaction.
NBC's The Year Without a Santa Claus is the tacky, live-action version of a beloved animated classic. John Goodman plays Santa, who has grown weary of Christmas commercialism and public nastiness. (Goodman's weariness comes across too effectively.
) Chris Kattan is the snooty elf pushing Santa to keep up with the times. Harvey Fierstein and Michael McKean headline a gaudy production number that is simply stupefying.
The one redeeming feature is Delta Burke's charming performance as Mrs.
Claus. Otherwise, a year without this Santa Claus would probably brighten the holidays.
