Leaner and younger

Stevie Nicks and Chris Isaak will give the opening concert of the season Friday at the Charter One Pavilion at Northerly Island in Chicago. But for the most part, old-timers take a back seat to young ones this summer at the lakefront venue. Chicago's Fall Out Boy and OK Go each will play three consecutive shows, starting Saturday and Tuesday, respectively.

WKQX-FM (101.1)'s Bloc Party will return June 15 and 16 with Godsmack, the Violent Femmes, Good Charlotte and more. For the really young fans, Next Fest on Aug.

31 will feature Aly AJ, Corbin Bleu, Drake Bell and Bianca Ryan. Incubus, 19-year-old blues singer Joss Stone, jam band O.A.

R., 311 and Jewish reggae singer Matisyahu also will play at Charter One this summer. The lineup for the venue's third season definitely appeals to a younger crowd with eclectic tastes, general manager David Shaw said.

"Charter One draws the kind of crowd that'll go to any show," he said. The Goo Goo Dolls and Barenaked Ladies are among the waning acts playing Charter One who used to be able to draw a crowd big enough for the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre in Tinley Park. Located near the Adler Planetarium where Meigs Field was wiped out, the Pavilion had 19 concerts in its inaugural season and 29 in 2006.

As of press time, 20 concerts have been announced for the Pavilion. A leaner schedule reflects Live Nation's approach to being more selective about where it plunks down its dollars. "We're being better buyers and not overpaying for talent," Shaw said.

Last year, Live Nation lost money on a few shows, he said. Even with a more selective lineup, fans can count on plenty of food at the pavilion this summer. "We're adding a food tent and putting all of our focus on one area for food to combine our resources," Shaw said.

"Last year, we sold more food than we thought we would." Vickie Snow may be reached at or (708) 633-5981. Charter One Pavilion at Northerly Island Lynn White Drive, Chicago (off Lake Shore Drive and 18th Drive, behind Soldier Field) Information: Call (312) 540-2668 or visit www.
