Cop accused of assaulting his family

Layton police arrested Centerville police Sgt. John Spencer following a dispute at his Layton house about 3:40 a.m.

, said Sgt. Rod Dixon of the Layton Police Department. Spencer was booked on suspicion of aggravated assault and aggravated child abuse, which are both felonies.

He was also booked on suspicion of interruption of a telecommunication device and criminal mischief, which are misdemeanors. Police allege Spencer assaulted his wife and her daughter and broke telephones inside the house so his wife could not dial 911. The daughter was treated at Primary Children's Medical Center, Dixon said.

Spencer, a 16-year veteran of the department, served most recently as a patrol sergeant. He has been placed on routine administrative leave pending an internal investigation, Centerville police Lt. Paul Child said.

Centerville Police Department posted a press release on its Web site expressing concern for "those who were the victims.
