Hey! There are new movies out this weekend and I have actually seen some of them!
If you're like me, you are probably salivating over the idea of a new flick from the man who brought us Secretary.

That'd be Steven Shainberg and his new one is Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus. So the movie isn't exactly about the real Diane Arbus, but is more of a made-up tribute. Or something.

Fur manages to maintain an intriguingly bizarre tone of wacked-out fantasia throughout, but it doesn't make the lasting impression that Secretary does. And the real Arbus was such a fascinating person, it's hard to care about this imagined riff on her life. Robert Downey Jr.

's character...

well, I can't really say much without giving stuff away, but there's a little SPOILER! in this entry's headline. As for Kidman, it's hard not to compare her wispy performance to Maggie Gyllenhaal's brave, breathtaking turn in that other movie I keep mentioning.

Then there's Copying Beethoven, which features Ed Harris, and which is also a somewhat fictionalized account of a famous real-life figure. But this one didn't bug me as much. Maybe it's because this is somewhat fictionalized and not totally imaginary.

Anyway, Ed Harris is in fine, grouchy old man form and totally rocks an earhorn. And Diane Kruger, who I am usually quite eh on, is very good as his copyist, Anna.
Finally, if you are a Christian Bale fan (as I am) and you've already seen The Prestige five times (as copy editor Janelle has), get thee to Harsh Times, the gritty directorial debut of David Ayer, who wrote Training Day.

The flick focuses on Jim (Bale), an ex-Army Ranger trying to land a position with the LAPD. He's also just a little bit out-of-control crazy and spends most of the movie getting into trouble with pal Mike, played by Freddy Rodriguez. Yes, it's pretty much Training Day 2, but Bale is mesmerizing.
