I have seen more duds this year, especially those that are third in a series, than I care to count. I was looking for a bright light -- something different. This movie has been getting rave reviews from the critics, and I liked it more for the married couple than for the main couple-to-be.
The story is about how Alison (Katherine Heigl) and Ben (Seth Rogan) have unsafe sex one time, one night. Then Alison finds out she is pregnant, and she tells Ben. Their only example of married life comes from Alison's sister, Debbie (Leslie Mann), and her husband Pete (Paul Rudd).
They are seemingly happy with two adorable girls. But darkness comes to both relationships. Let me get the warnings out first.
If you do not like use of the F-word, or if you are uncomfortable with sex scenes in movies, you are not going to like this one. Don't go. Don't be bothered.
Take in an action flick instead. This is an R-rated, sex comedy. But the parts that really made me laugh in discomfort were the fight scenes.
There were no fisticuffs, just a war of words that felt spot-on. At one point Debbie and Pete have a knock-down, drag-out fight, telling each other how much they hate one another. Even as I watched this, I knew I have had that very fight, which sounded just as ridiculous in real life as it did in the theater.
Maybe this movie is supposed to be about how people make the best of what we, and life, produce. For instance, Alison and Ben find love for each other despite the fact they are total opposites as far as ambition and lifestyle are concerned. But Knocked Up is also an affirmation of marriage.
Like Debbie and Pete, many of our marriages are not perfect. But we stick it out, day in and day out, because we really like the person we are married to and want a life with them. Alison and Ben were compelling to watch, they were cute in finding love and life together.
But really, I was rooting for Debbie and Pete the whole time. Karyn Bowman lives in Kankakee County and can be reached at momgoestothemovies@sbcglobal.net.
