In its first six days in release, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" took in an estimated $401 million worldwide, shattering a variety of records. Walt Disney Pictures is claiming that the six-day opening is now the largest of all-time worldwide, with the $401 million topping the $382 million opening for "Spider-Man 3" earlier in the month. "Spider-Man 3," of course, opened without the benefit of an associated holiday frame.
Since opening on Thursday (May 24) night, the third film in the blockbuster buccaneer saga has earned $156 million in the United States, including $142 million for the Memorial Day four-day holiday, which topped the $122.8 million record set last year by "X-Men: The Last Stand." It took "At World's End" five days to top the three-day opening for "Spider-Man 3," which remains the opening weekend record-holder with $151.
1 million. The six-day opening overseas for "Spider-Man 3" was $232 million, a figure "Pirates 3" had topped through Monday with $245 million. The studio is reporting that "At World's End" had broken opening weekend records in a slew of foreign territories, including Korea, Japan, Russia, Spain, Taiwan and the Netherlands.
"Spider-Man 3" remained a distant second overseas with a $20.7 million weekend, breaking its foreign cumulative total to $500.9 million and pushing its worldwide gross over $800 million to date.
