UN special envoy Michael Williams and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas today discussed efforts to establish an Israeli-Palestinian truce during a meeting in Gaza City.
The UN envoy for the Middle East said he and Mr Abbas looked at ldquo;ways of reaching a general truce with Israel in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, as well as ways to make progress on the internal Palestinian front rdquo;.He was ldquo;saddened that his visit was taking place at a such a difficult time rdquo;, Mr Williams said, referring to the cycle of violence between Israel and the Palestinians and the murderous Hamas-Fatah clashes earlier this month.
Since May 16, Israeli air raids have killed 45 Palestinians in response to the firing into the Jewish state of Palestinian rockets which have killed an Israeli woman and wounded several people.
Tomorrow, Egypt is to host talks with representatives of Palestinian factions, including Fatah and Hamas, on ways to strengthen the truce in inter-Palestinian clashes and the possibility of a ceasefire with Israel.
