HOLBEACH residents are up in arms over proposals for two more telecommunications masts near their homes. Homeowners in Mondemont Close are horrified at the prospect of three mobile phone masts in Carter’s Park, saying health risks have not been ruled out. There is already a Vodaphone mast at Holbeach United Football Club and two more companies have expressed an interest in putting up masts there.
Before this can happen permission must be given by land owner Holbeach Parish Council and then South Holland District Council’s planning department. Resident Robert Ely said they are disappointed not to have been officially told of the plans, while Michael Williams, who also lives in the close, said a Government report is unable to prove whether the masts are dangerous or not. He said: “If they decide in five years’ time they are dangerous it will be too late.
“We’ve lived here for 11 years and are happy. We don’t want to be forced to move.” Mum Julie Matthewson is concerned for the health of her four-year-old child.
She said: “There must be a better place to put a mobile phone mast in Holbeach. “Why should the parish council get rent for something that’s detrimental to the town?” Joan Norman can see the existing mast from her kitchen window and says she doesn’t want any more marring her view.
club secretary, said nothing has been finalised. He said: “At the moment these are just proposals. We could end up with another two masts or no more.
“The proposed masts look very different to the existing one. They are more like thin lampposts. “There is no dangerous radio fallout from the masts.
“They will be where our players, including 180 youths, play and train every week. We wouldn’t do anything to put them at risk.” Holbeach parish councillor Terry Harrington has met football club officials and said any concerns over radiation should be addressed before the council gives permission.
Neither Steve Baragwanath, headteacher at the George Farmer Technology and Language College, nor Susan Boor, head of Holbeach Primary School, have concerns over the masts. The football club refused to say who was behind the plans. HOLBEACH residents are up in arms over proposals for two more telecommunications masts near their homes.
