After Volkswagen brought back the Beetle and Fiat just unveiled a 21st century version of its 500, Citroën is about to relaunch its fabled 2 CV (better known in France as the Deux Cheveaux), .
You still occasionally see a 2CV rolling along in France, which has still remained popular more than a decade decades after Citroën phased it out. By no means a luxury car and certainly not a racer, the fabled model is often associated with a simpler and happier time.
The modern version will likely be eco-minded and fun.
See the jump page for a pic of the original model.
The 2CV also found its way into Americana in George Lucas' American Graffiti, which I've always considered to be one of the best car flicks ever made.
Remember what Richard Dreyfuss' character drives towards the end of the movie where he goes to wait for the mysterious phone call?
Hey, this looks funnier than the original! Is it for real?
As for "American Graffiti", it was the shot near the BEGINNING of the movie that I liked; Dreyfus pulls up to the diner in the blue 2cv, gets out, slams the door, and then KICKS the car. What an idiot! I happen to have a 2cv Charleston, just like the one pictured above (maroon and black), which I brought back from France in 2001 after seeing it for sale while I was attending my daughter's wedding in the Loire Valley.
It is a great little car, and in the age of $3.00 gas, it's nice to get 50 mpg too.
