FRENCH actor Gerard Depardieu shunned a summons to appear before an Italian court today for allegedly headbutting a local photographer in 2005, and the ruling is now set for next year. Photographer Dario Orlandi claims to have been attacked on October 3, 2005 when he snapped Depardieu shopping in a market in Florence with a young woman. He says Depardieu beckoned to him and then headbutted him in the face, with the result that he could not work for four days.

Orlandi's lawyer, Alessandro Ramerini, said Depardieu failed to turn up at the Florence court despite a summons, adding: The ruling will be delivered only on April 16, 2008 because the judge handling the case has been changed. Depardieu could face damages or community service, Ramerini said. Depardieu said Orlandi was a paparazzo, a charge rejected by the photographer who is a member of two journalists' unions.
