'The tree woke us up'

DALTON A pair of Dalton residents received a rude awakening yesterday morning when part of a tree collapsed onto some wires causing an electrical fire in the basement. Ryan Williams and his sister, Kristen Williams, were asleep at 7 a.m.

, when the top portion of a downhill tree snapped off and fell toward their Dalton Division Road home. He soon noticed the power was out and was going to call the electric company for some minor repairs when he began to notice smoke coming from the family's basement. He immediately called his father, Michael Williams, owner of the house, who rushed home from work.

All the members of the family safely exited and waited outside for emergency crews to respond. Members from the Pittsfield Fire and Police departments arrived to the scene, as well as Dalton Fire Chief Richard Kardasen. Traffic along the Dalton Division Road was slowed for about an hour as emergency vehicles had to park at the bottom of the hilly driveway.

Pittsfield Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cancilla said that the tree fall took down some wires and caused a current to run uphill to where it connected to the DALTON A pair of Dalton residents received a rude awakening yesterday morning when part of a tree collapsed onto some wires causing an electrical fire in the basement.
