The third annual Sgt. Nutter 5K run, sponsored by the New Jersey Army National Guard, will take place at the National Guard Training Center, located in Sea Girt.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the family of Caitlyn McGuire, the daughter of Spc. Robert McGuire and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Mickey McGuire. Caitlyn is two years old, and has been diagnosed with neuroblastoma.
This form of cancer occurs most often in infants and young children, initiating in the nerve tissue of the adrenal glands and is usually not diagnosed until the tumor grows, causing serious symptoms. By that point, the cancer has often spread to other parts of the body.
Caitlyn is currently undergoing chemotherapy to battle the cancer.
The cost to participate in the run is $20 if postmarked by May 10, and $25 on the day of the event. All members of the public are invited to join the run.
The day s activities include an artillery start, free t-shirts, entertainment by the Chief George Band, refreshments, a raffle and 45 prizes for winners in the various categories.
The race is held is honor of Sgt. Sam Nutter, a member of the New Jersey National Guard who died in January 2005 after a battle with cancer.
The proceeds from last year s run went to benefit Ashleigh Gwin, the daughter of a fellow member of the New Jersey National Guard.
The Sgt. Sam Nutter Organization established the annual event in his memory to benefit families of Guard members.
