The book which was published 12 years ago pulled 40 % of the votes in a global vote on the past winners of the Carnegie Medal for Children's Literature. The shortlist included other children's classics such as Tom's Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce, The Borrowers by Mary Norton and the most recent book on the list Jennifer Donnelly's 2003 novel A Gathering Light.
Pullman won the Carnegie medal in 1995 His Dark Materials has gon on to sell 15 million copies worldwide. Phillip Pullman said: "This accolade is without question the most important honour I have ever recieved, and the one I treasure the most." The trilogy is based around Lyra who travels to the north to save her best friend.
