THROUGHOUT their lives, one Kidman sister has always ridden just slightly higher than the other, but the differences in their fortunes have never seemed more stark than they did at Antonia's 37th birthday party last night. Hollywood megastar Nicole arrived at North Bondi Italian Restaurant bejewelled hand in hand with her celebrity husband Keith Urban, looking as loved up as newlyweds should. Surprisingly, however, Nicole and Urban waded through a sea of photographers and left the party at 9.
30pm after staying barely two hours. They were whisked away by their driver in a black Audi with tinted windows. Pay-TV star Antonia turned up to her birthday bash alone and slightly downcast, having separated from her husband, Angus Hawley, just three months ago, after he was admitted to a clinic suffering depression and anxiety''.
Fortunately her superstar sibling - who had flown in from Darwin earlier in the day, where she's been filming Baz Luhrmann's epic, - was on hand to make sure her celebration was a worthy one. We're staying in for my sister's birthday,'' a smiling Nicole said as she entered the swanky eatery, flanked by two security escorts who kept the waiting paparazzi pack at bay. The elder Kidman was looking stunning as usual, dripping in jewels and wearing a simple but elegant mid-thigh-length black dress.
Her country-rock star husband went with the de rigeur five'o'clock shadow on top of an outfit of black shirt and jeans. They were joined by the Kidman matriarch, Janelle Kidman, and some of Antonia's closest friends. There was no sign of her children, however.
Nicole organised the party, for 34 guests, herself, shutting down the Bondi institution for their exclusive use. The restaurant doesn't normally take bookings at all, and was forced to turn away dozens of unsuspecting paying customers last night. What they glimpsed through the specially blacked-out shutters was a very rowdy, and cheery-sounding party, with mood lighting and an open bar.
Nicole has been super supportive of her sister, and her four children, since her split with Hawley, just as Antonia was there for her when she was dumped by Tom Cruise in 1999, and when Urban was admitted to rehab, just four months after they married. Nicole, who turned 40 last month, will be staying on in Sydney to do more shooting for Australia this week. The film, which has been described as a uniquely antipodean , has already taken Kidman and co-star Hugh Jackman to the Northern Territory, but that part of the shoot has now wrapped.
The eagerly awaited film is expected to be released in November next year. (What is this?) Post to del.
