Subscribe to Archivestuff Have your say "Whatever violence that is in this movie cannot even begin to be compared to the truth of what we learned," director Edward Zwick (The Last Samurai) intones on his solemn commentary for this exciting, suspenseful dramatisation of how the illegal diamond trade fuelled civil war in Sierra Leone. "The degradations that were foisted upon the people by the Revolutionary United Front were beyond any imagining." Blood Diamond leaves little to imagine but still glamourises the horrors with a rich vein of Hollywood hokum that emphasises adventure over agenda.

Yet not even the 24-carat casting of Leonardo DiCaprio as a fearless rogue and Jennifer Connelly as a sexy war correspondent can rob Blood Diamond of its intensity, integrity and craftsmanship (complete with costumes by Kiwi Ngila Dickson). Extras include a documentary about today's diamond trade and an analysis of how the movie's bloody chaos was meticulously choreographed. Blood Diamond: Special Edition is rated R16.

Directed by Edward Zwick, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Connelly and Djimon Hounsou. Out now through Warner Bros Pictures. Do you agree with this review?
