Date of release: Date of Review: Flags of our Fathers is a powerful film based on the true story of a small group of marines, whose image was captured on film at a critical moment. These were the men who raised the American flag over the island of Iwo Jima, a Japanese held island captured by the United States Marine Corp in 1945. This film details the true story behind the photo that was widely published in American newspapers, and was instrumental in the success of the seventh War Bonds tour that raised $23 million in war bonds sales.

the film is based on a book by James Bradley, son of one of the marines, and Ron Powers. It follows the story of about John "Doc" Bradley and his fellow marines who helped raise the flag on Iwo Jima. It transpires that this was the second flag to be raised above the island, after the original was sent to a politician as a souvenir.

This time around, a war correspondent with camera at the ready was on hand to capture the moment. Directed by Clint Eastwood and produced By Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg, this film is full of powerful images and moving moments as Eastwood recreates the carnage and the nightmares of this World War Two battle. He has gathered some well-known cast members to the film with Ryan Phillipe as John "Doc" Bradley, Jesse Bradford as Rane Gagnon and Adam Beach as Ira Hayes.

The DVD is packed full of extras in a 2 disc package including interviews with cast members, the director, the author of the book, documentary on the special effects, the original theatrical trailer and much more.
