Would You Have Sex with Seth Rogen? - Cinematical

1. Not only would I sleep with Seth Rogen's Ben but I would marry him as well. In fact my husband is a real life "Ben".

..so I say Jeff Well's is missing the point!

Katherine Heigl's Alison is a hottie with a great job BUT she is, at heart, a really nice girl. Nice girls don't want slick guys that look picture perfect!!

! We want real guys, with real heart, and that "stick with you through thick and thin" attitude that Jeff Well's doesn't get.
2.

That guy at Hollywood Elsewhere couldn't have gotten it more wrong. I'm 21 which is roughly two years away from where the main characters are in their lives and I think the film couldn't have been more accurate. First an foremost it sounds like this guy might have been turned down by a bunch of hottie so he figures its impossible to happen.

Yes, ben's not the best looking, nor is he sucessful but he's a sweet guy that stepped up and tired to be in it with Alison from the get and THAT is why she fell for him. As a 21 year old I see it happening all around me, not the pregnancy thing, but a lot of young girls are getting more accomplished and sucessful than their male counter parts who are still stoners and taking longer to mature, so its totally possible for A) these people to exist and B) for Alison to fall in love with Ben. Would I sleep with him?

eh I might have to drink a bit.
3. Ben's friend starts hitting on Allison's sister, so Alison feels some relief that her sister isn't so bummed out.

This partially explains why Alison is so instantly drawn to Ben. It's a pretty realistic encounter and hookup.
4.

Don't forget that Seth's character is hilarious and he has her laughing from the first second they meet. That makes a lot of difference. She's out celebrating and having a good time.

I don't think this is that unbelievable.
5. Part of the reason movies like this sell are that they do represent the white male fantasy.

That's why you see so much crtical and box office endorsement. There is nothing wrong with this. I mean I loved 40 Year Old Virgin, and movies like Sideways, but let's call a duck, a duck okay?

Let's play a game- what kind of story would it have been if they had stuck a young black guy in that role? I am just curious because I always do that in my head with movies like these now a days. It reorients how I see whats happening.

I am sure this is a great film. Good films aren't always suppose to be realistic. Those defending on that level are well - kind of retarded.

That's a little like defending Lord of Rings by saying there real is a middle earth. I am sure there could be one. But so what.

It has nothing to do with whether the movie is good or not.
6. By the way- the one thing I do have to say is that the NYTImes review was well way over the top.

Sexual confusion of our times? I don't know about you, but I don't see much 20 and 30 something sexual confusion. I see a lot of old farts talking about confusion.

It certainly isn't anymore or less or any different than anything that came before us. I am not going to say whether they were influenced by their intereview with teh director that appears in the NY TImes Magazine section this week or whether they are just on white guy fantasy trip, but this review was over the top.
7.

I think a good chunk of his review is based off of the bias the region he's in. In places like New York, LA and Miami there is a certain level of status-conscientious. People go out of their to mind their status and how people view them.

I grew up in Miami, then moved to Seattle as an adult and I can tell its a HUGE difference in how people view it. I never got into whole status scene, but I remember seeing my friends and their parents going out and having to buy the right stuff (clothes, houses and especially cars) and be scene at the right places to be accepted by their peers. While in Seattle (I was more north of Seattle) it was more of a no one really cared and should I wear red or blue flannel on the date.

Kim is right there are more couples were one is "hot" and the other is "average" in Seattle/PNW then I have seen anywhere else. 8. Maybe Wells is upset that he's never bagged a hot chick?

Seriously, Wells needs to have a few relationships - not sexual - with women to understand they just tick differently. Girls aren't nearly as shallow as men. I'm amazed at what women find attractive and quite often it's not the generic looks thing that gets them hot.

Never had a problem getting really hot women and not only am I cynical and a tad geeky, I'm not even close to fit or healthy looking.
9. I think some of you are missing the point.

It's not just looks- how many couples do you know where one is kind of a looser and unattractive, and the other is sucessful and attractive. I agree there are always couples with unequals, but this sort of thing really is the white male fantasy that we see in tv and film. Like i said- thats fine, but lets call a duck a duck.

10. And yes women are as shallow as men are- just in different ways. In other words, they are willing to overlook looks, butt there is no way in hell , unless they are emotionally fucked up, they will accept some got who is an idiot into their lives.

Again- where are these women who are sucessful who are dating guys who are both unattractive physically and emotionally who then accept guys like this?
11. It's impossible to generalize about women based on how attractive/successful they are.

There are some attractive, successful women who simply wouldn't ever look at Ben, and others who might be more like Heigl's character. Also, I should point out that she's not all that successful when they meet. She's a lowly PA who has just gotten the bump to on screen work a few hours earlier, it certainly hasn't begun to inform her lifestyle.

PA's work terrible hours and make worse pay, yes, she's doing better than Seth Rogan's character is, but not by the wide gulf that some people seem to think. Would I sleep with someone who looked like Ben? If he was charming and funny, definitely.

But hey, I don't think he's the hideous troll beast that some people seem to think. Other than being a little pudgy and permanently unshaved I think he's kind of cute.
12.

As a woman, I can safely say, that many women wouldn't be put off by the looks issue. If he were sweet and funny, he gets big bonus points to compensate for the "not hot" issue. But the no job, no house, no car phenomena, no way!

And even thinking about having a baby with this guy after a one night stand...

Hell to the no! ( An NBA player and a one night stand is another story altogether.) This movie is as big a fantasy for guys as "Pretty Woman" was to some women.

13. "Again- where are these women who are sucessful who are dating guys who are both unattractive physically and emotionally who then accept guys like this?" Ben wasn't emotionally unattractive, he was just immature, which tends to be the case with young men and women, it takes them a little while to mature.

This is the case that's happening with 20 year olds. What got her I think is that he was a sweet guy and was sincere with his intentions so it's not impossible. I don't think it's a while male fantasy unless you're generalizing all white males to be like Ben or worse.

14. it's a white male fantasy because I am extrapolating from the fact that these sorts of things- whether they are good or not - tend to get box office. and there are shows- as someone mention CBSs comedy line up- based on this premise.

And sorry, but being polite is like only a small part of the picture, I am going to let the cat out of the bag. I am a gay man, I get to see this from the outside looking in and having talked to women about these sorts of things. None of my women friends would go- okay he's polite so I am going to overlook the fact he's a loser.

That just doesn't happen. Not in the cities. Maybe someplace where women are so hard up for men they aren't already lookign around for something better, but even there, I doubt it.

Don't get me wrong. I loved 40 Year Old Virgin because it was just plain funny, and I don't think anyone should be looking to these movies for reality checks. But the idea that these movies aren't guy movies is just false.

I was talking to this guy at work recently- and he said "i don't normally go to chick movies but this one looks cool." A girl piped in- that's because this is a guy movie masquerading as a chick flick. He smiled- and said yeah.

That's all i am saying. It's only recently you are starting to see black films or latino films like this so thats why I say mostly white male- just because thats the primary audience it seems for this movie.
