A COURT order for the immediate arrest of Richard Gere and Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty for their kiss at an AIDS benefit function in New Delhi has outraged India's legal community, with one lawyer likening it to the actions of the Taliban.

The court order - made by Dinesh Gupta, additional chief magistrate in Jaipur - held that the widely publicised hug and kiss was sexually erotic and indecent .
Gere is liable to be jailed for three months the moment he sets foot back in India.

Mr Gupta took action after fundamentalist Hindu groups across India attacked the kiss as un-Indian and an affront to the morals of society , even though India is the country that brought the world the Karma Sutra and the sexually explicit ancient love temples at Khajurao.
Gere, a frequent visitor to India who is widely admired for his charitable works, especially in helping with the massive AIDS crisis, said he was confident theproblem would be sorted out.
There is a very small right-wing, very conservative political party in India and they are the moral police in India and they do this kind of thing quite often, Gere said in an interview on US television.

I don't know that any one has actually gone to jail, it has to go through a process. It goes to a reputable court and they throw it out.
Shetty, one of Bollywood's most admired figures, is liable to be arrested, although there was no sign of this happening last night.
