Young minds participating in an elite scholastic program used some new school teachings Monday involving some old school materials. Lego sets were front and centre at the annual Shad Valley program that involves some of the brightest high school students in Canada. The students were asked to build models and then develop a story to accompany their model.

While the exercise encourages creativity and innovative thinking it is also very revealing about the builder. Spencer Lucas built an environmentally friendly bus and says the exercise is a real eye-opener. ''After I just put this together I see more of a creative side that I've never seen before.

So that's kind of sparked my attention there.'' Jacqueline Lloyd Smith of Lloyd Smith Solutions said '' It teaches them which type of imagination they use. So that when they start using invention-kind of thinking and working it in innovative ways, they actually understand more about themselves, whether they could be a trouble-shooter or marketers.

Or whether they could be starting from scratch or adapting models.'' After the individual models, the students then worked in teams and had to develop, market and sell model airplanes. The exercise focused on team building through problem solving.
