The music director of the Richmond (Va.) Symphony has accepted a dual position as director of new music projects for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and artistic director of orchestral studies at the University of Minnesota, beginning in September.

The school and the SPCO have agreed to create a joint position for Smith, who - in addition to running the University program - will conduct for six weeks during the SPCO season, overseeing its Engine408 new music series. Smith is a graduate of the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music and was music director of the Cheyenne Symphony and Massachusetts' Springfield Symphony before moving on to Richmond. He will continue to lead that orchestra through 2009.

The position will bring his family closer together: His wife is Minnesota Orchestra French horn player Ellen Dinwiddie Smith. They have two children. Return to Top The Pioneer Press is pleased to let readers post comments about an article at the end of the article.
