A man is dead and his mother's companion is in jail after a family argument ended in gunfire early Sunday in Salt Lake City. Police said Nathan Valdez, 25, brandished a shotgun and confronted his mother's companion, David T. after learning Smith had kicked his mother out of the apartment the couple shared at 746 N.
Wielding a handgun, Smith allowed Valdez into the apartment, where the two argued until Valdez pointed the shotgun at Smith, police said. Smith then fired one shot from a handgun into Valdez's chest. Valdez died at LDS Hospital.
