Some 200 Chico State Upward Bound students will remove weeds at Caper Acres and One-Mile Recreation Area in Bidwell Park on Friday. From 1:30-4 p.m.

, Conservation Corps members and park volunteers will help students identify weeds around baby oak trees and remove American pokeweed, privets, Himalayan blackberry and English ivy. Other projects will include straightening up around the Caper Acres fence and cutting blackberry vines from a south side creek trail. Upward Bound students have volunteered their help in Bidwell Park for almost 25 years.

The organization serves high school students from low-income families, from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree, and low-income, first-generation military veterans who are preparing to enter post-secondary education. The goal is to increase rates at which participants enroll in and graduate from posts-secondary institutions. Registration takes place at Caper Acres on Friday.
